2001 Polo gti vs 2001 Lupo gti

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm considering upgrading from a 6n to something with abit more power. The two cars i have in mind are the 2001 lupo and polo gti. Just wondering if there is anyone out there thats able to sway me either way.

Thanks in advance.

The lighter and faster Lupo is far more desirable and always will be,because of its strong gearbox (the 6-speed is obviously more desirable than the 5),and use of some aluminium panels including full aluminium doors and bonnet.

^ Agreed! Many car magazines saw the lupo GTI as the spiritual successor to the mk1 Golf GTI when it was released

They carry the same gearbox faults though...

Aluminium front wings and bonnet not sure about doors?

Shame there pretty small inside and not much boot space, but it depends what you want out of a car.

It'd be perfect if the polo had the 6 speed box with the lupo hydraulic clutch.

I'm glad i went for the Polo over the GTI. I like the Lupo look but tbh i think the polo is more sensible.

I thought the polo and lupo wer supposed to have the same performance????

Maybe the lupo slightly quicker to 60 due to the gearbox and slight weight advantage.

Only thing is they both come with the same problems bar the pedal box on the lupo is fine

Polo=cheaper as well

Lupo has ally doors, front wings, boot and bonnet iirc

Lupo GTis tend to command more money than polos, due to them being rarer or something?

Well they made them til 05 i think so they would catch more monies than the polo.

Generally better equipped too. Few extra little bits as well over the polo too :(

Lupo GTIs seem to post very similar track times to a Mk2 Golf 16v which is fairly impressive considering they are down on power. The Polo GTIs are never anywhere near, track time wise. Something must make the Lupo better. The optional 6 speed box would be one, meaning you could be in the right gear all the time, and the Lupos apparently handle a fair bit better too.

When I was looking at buying my car I was going for either a Polo or Lupo GTi, but went for the Polo and I'm so glad I did. In my opinion the Polo's just seem to have a bit more about them, and more presence than the Lupo's. Plus they look and feel so much nicer inside and have a few extra's, the Lupo's just feel a bit cheap to me.

Yeah the Lupo will be a bit quicker because it's a smaller, lighter car. But they both have 125bhp so the difference is never going to be massive. Lupo's are probably a bit more fun to drive because of the size of them, but for me the Polo's more of the 'full package' (and still fun to drive :p). That's just my opinion, depends on what you want I guess.

Thanks for all your help guys.

No contest Lupo Gti is by far the better car, looks great, handles great, lighter, better alloys the list goes on. Even so both have the same engine which for a GTI was lame.

Depends on your personal requirements to be fair.

The lupo is alittle lighter due to the lighter panels in some areas but remember they are ALOT of money to replace. Not all lupo GTIs came with air conditioning whereas the polo GTI did.If i remember correctly the earlier 2000-2001 models had 5 speed boxes and shared the same faults as the polo box did.The lupos obviously have less boot space and has an annoying gutter type tray on the dash no glovebox etc.

Theres alot to compare and i haven't got time to list them all, post what you want from the car/cars and that'll help us out.Best thing to do is view a coiple of each car and see what you prefer.

I have a 2001 Polo GTi, and the missus has a 2001 Lupo GTi....

Difficult to say really. There's no doubt about it, the 6 speed box and the hydrolic clutch is miles ahead of the Polo's cheese gearbox lol. The lupo feels a lot nippier but the gear ratios are quite close so your soon into 6th and changing a lot I think. But the Polo feels like a bit of lump compared. But the Polo I think looks a bit more male being more square compared to the cuter Lupo round front.

Lol at all the 6n2 gti owners coming out to defend their cars :p :)

We bought our Polo as we needed something smallish but with a decent sized boot to carry our little lads buggy and associated baby related crap around in. Polo fit the bill, Lupo didn't. So from a practicality point of view, the Polo wins hands down. For pure driving experience and if it was just a car for me to drive, I'd get a Lupo. In fact no, I'd get another supercharged mk1 MX5.

they do not carry the same gear box faults trust me i never had trouble with mine !!!!

and the 5 speed is better than the 6 speed depending on how you drive and were !!!

matt

I've never had trouble with mine!

Nor mine.

As many have said it depends what you want out of a car, the Lupo GTI is more of a drivers car the Polo GTI is more practical.

Then you wonder, when the Polo's on the drive when the gearbox spits its dummy out it's not being as practical as a functional lupo!

The Lupo is a far superior motor.

the polo gearbox is cool until you start doing burnouts and vicious engine braking.

anywho I've never had either polo gti or lupo gti, lupo is tons more expensive to buy and insure for most.

however I find my 16v 6n2 (100hp) to be very good fun to drive especially the lift off oversteer, its bigger and you like less of a pansy.

Lupo = Girls version end of. No Argument

i've had a lupo gti and a polo gti and like others are saying the lupo is slightly quicker but when racing my mates polo i was pulling away until i had to change gear and then he was right bk alongside me. it's the polo i have now and wouldn't change back to a lupo altho they do have some nice touches tht the polo doesn't for the extra money you'll pay for a lupo i personaly dont think its worth the expense!

Polo gti's FTW lol

The Lupo GTI's have a different gearbox to the Polo's, the 5-speeds are not the same. They don't have the gearbox problems. In fact they have hardly any problems at all.

They are a lot more expensive, but they hold their money way better. They barely depreciate at all, due to their rarity, reliability and how 'special' they are. Virtually every panel is different to a standard Lupo, they have thinner glass all round for weight saving, wider track and all sorts of other bits. They didn't just make it a bit quicker like they do with all other GTI models.

The doors, bonnet and wings are aluminium. The bootlid isn't.

Isn't the cabin space the same size inside? I thought the only difference was the size of the boot? Lupo's feel way bigger from the front seats though, IMO.

And they don't have those stupid "1's" on the seats.

I like them both, but the Lupo is hands down the better car. :-p

Lupo GTI all the way. Its a more special bispoke car.

If you look at a Polo GTI you can recreate one out of a non-GTI shell quite easily. Different bumper grilles and headlights and you can make any look like a GTI. The Lupo has different wings, headlights, bumper, doors, rear arches, the wheel well is totally different so the exhaust can run through it. It was made to be something special little things like thinner glass, replacing steel with alloy. Giving hydraulic clutch over cable. So many little changes that make it totally different to a normal Lupo. You can't just make a normal Lupo into a Lupo GTI.

Polo GTI just doesn't compare really. Suppose thats why Polo GTIs are a hell of a lot cheaper than Lupo GTIs.
