2. Its not that easy on a mk3, unless you have an endless budget (assuming he's in a mk3)

no its a mk5, dont have enough for coilovers at the moment and i was only wanting it a bit lower. i was only asking because cutting standard springs has been brought up lately and i noticed mclovin said it was safe to cut a few off and thats with standard shocks and springs. i was only wanting to cut one off and i thought seen as i had uprated shocks it would be ok. from what iv read in other threads it seems like people that haven't done it say its 'pikey' and 'dangerous' but people that have done it say its fine.

i no someone said its hard to say how much drop u will get with one coil off but could it go down 40mm or more.... or is that unlikely? cheers

same mate i have 40mm springs all round and 40mm is fine on my mk3 at the back but the front i would probley want lower, so i was also wanting to know if its safe + M.O.T passable? + will i need other stuff to cut the springs to about 60mm like maybe dampers? and how much are the damper? :) saves making a new topic + I'm sure the person who made this topic will find the anwsers to my questions usefull him self :)

You already have upated shocks which will be a lot shorter than standard ones so taking another coil off should be fine. The main issues with chopped springs are due to it fucking up the shocks (mostly due to warn standard shocks being used and over worked), and the springs being loose when the car's jacked up (mostly due to too much being chopped off, more often than not on standard shocks).

It's not chopping springs that's dangerous, its the fact that angle grinder sales don't have IQ restrictions on them

sean if you have standard shocks i wouldn't recomend going any lower, lowering a car on standard shocks will fuck them up, the lower you go the quicker this will happen.

If you are buying uprated shocks you might as well get a -60 kit, i doubt it would cost much more than just shocks thb

that seems like a standard sheffield come back haha.

how hard is it, not really done anything with suspension before but iv used an angle grinder before. do you just compress all but one coil the grind one off? how easy is it to go wrong? anyone want to help he hahaha!

i've just jacked the car up, removed the wheel and chopped the spring directly opposite where the bottom coil seats in the cup. it will ping mind

iv been running choped front springs on my 2 polos .

had a 60 60 kit but wanted to level the car out so choped a coil off at the front

I'm not running chopped springs at the moment,but that's unusual. I am however running lowered springs with standard-fitment front dampers.

As ever,its all about suitability. These springs are about 40/40. The front dampers are just short enough to keep the spring secure. The dampers will last at least 40k.

well cheers for the help guys, gonna do it in about 2 weeks, just really hope it doesn't go any more then 30mm! how much did the front drop portsmouthBMX (sorry don't no your name haha) when you cut the front of your 60/60 springs?

Remember to measure the links with the car on the ground for ride height. The rear end coils of a /40 or 60mm spring are touching the next coil under the weight,so cutting one coil off here only lowers 10mm. One coil from the front shouldn't be more than 15mm as the gap between the first two coils is only about 5mm plus again the 10mm thickness of the coil.

These sensible amounts,when taken from compatible spring and damper pairing,are fine.

oh one last thing, do i cut from the top or bottom?

The next coil must match the seated one. With some springs,the next coil wont seat,because the coil is wound tapered.

The top of the front springs on 20th century Polos is like this,so you can only take a coil off the bottom. The rear,either end.

Some cars have springs tapered both ends,so those cannot be shortened.

ok i get that apart from what does wound tapered mean?

the last coils will have a smaller diameter than the centre. Like the pointy end of a pencil
