Recommended 1st Car Insurers?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just looking for some help on cheap insurers for 17 year olds and their first cars??

My car is a 1996 mk4 Polo 1.9D... A 1.9 is pretty big for a first car so quotes are going to be moderately high :-(

Current Quotes: (all are comprehensive)

Co-Operative Insurance:

12month = £3018.08

Elephant.co.uk:

12month = £4675.85

10month accelerator = £4063.42

eCar Insurance:

12month = £5362.74

And a few other all above £5400

Anyone know any insurers that could offer me a better deal??

The only modifications are that the car is lowered :-)

Quote from Quinn is £5,894.01 :cry:

Should I declare that the car is lowered??

Quote is £5,125.24 when I remove modifications..

try adding your mum and dad to the policy, or anyoe who is old with lots of no cliams,

they act as references realy.

You can't do that unless the no claims aren't on another car..

Just put your mum or dad as the main driver on the policy without the no claims and it will drop down drastically and put yourself as the second driver for now..

Adding my dad (as named driver) to the policy brings it to: £4,971.49

Hold on and I'll quote with my dad as main driver and me as named :D

EDIT: OK I get quoted £4,472.95

try co-op agian, and do 3rd party fire and theft.

i agree if you want to get on the road and don't care how.. 3rd party fire and theft with co-op is the way 2 go..

Can't see anywhere to change the cover :S

Plus this time when I quoted I get £2862.06 where before it was £3018.08 :D

They only do fully comp I think,

If you add more people to the co-op policy the price goes up!

My mum as the main driver of my 1.0 2000 polo and me as a named driver being 18 and having my licence for less than a year:

£2015 with £450 excess

With my dad added with clean licence and history:

£2838 with £450 excess

And my mum works for the coop so I think I can get discount on top of that hopefully :-)

At the end of the quote it says 25% discount added for No claims when I didn't even add them on, unless its something coop do them selves? :oops:

Yeh, Most likely just insure the car for me as provisional, then hopefully by the time I pass my test I'll sell the polo and get a nice smaller engined Golf :D

I like a mk2, mk3 Golf more then Polo but I got the car for £75 with some few mods done and needing an MOT incl some work to be done before then so it was a nice project car to do me as my first car :D

Mods I know of (haven't had a good look at the car becuase when I got it it was the day before I went on holiday and I'm just back yesterday :))

Lowered, Maybe coilovers but need to remove wheels to be sure (>50mm, no idea of the exact figure buts its LOW lol)

Tinted Windows all round

3" plus exhaust (Sounds pretty good even for a diesel :lol:)

Rear smoked lights

Possibly other things I haven't found yet haha

I believe the car was at some point owned by a member of club polo, the passenger side has the CP website sticker :)

is that a pug 206 rear bumper? :lol:

them wheels look boring, but look so good on that car.

Aye, I wasn't planning on getting something like my 1.9l but as I say it was a cheap bargain £75 or it was off to the scrap man :(

I'll most likely clean it up a bit and sell it on for a small profit and go towards something with a nice small engine :D

But until then I'll most likely insure it for me on provisional while i'm getting lessons then sell it on :D

Yep thats a pug's bumper :lol: It was on it when I got the car lol

As it is now is the way I got it :D

Are you ringing them or doing it online?

Online qoutes i find are utter bollocks. They always come up at silly amounts

Try adrian flux. They do a young drivers scheme and they beat all the quotes i got but about 1K.

some places wanted near 3K, flux wanted 1.5K

Yeh I'm dong it online at the moment, Not really looking for insurance just now.. Just wanting estimated quotes on how much it will be when I pass my test :D

Should I go Comprehensive or third party?? Which is better for a young 17 year old driver?

Also should I declare that the car is lowered 60/50 on jamex springs n shocks??

Tried Adrian Flux with my dad on as a named driver but...

They said they wouldn't insure me with my parent as a named driver if the vehicle was in my name :( (Because I'm under 25...)

Would there be much of a price difference by not adding parents ?

*****************************************************

My lowest price so far:

Comprehensive - Elephant.co.uk (With Mum & Dad as named drivers)

12month = £3667.85

10month accelerator = £3187.14

Third Party Fire & Theft - Elephant.co.uk (With Mum & Dad as named drivers)

12month = £2695.55

10month accelerator = £2338.85

Third Party Only - Elephant.co.uk (With Mum & Dad as named drivers)

12month = ££2648.30

10month accelerator = £2297.76

Should I go with Comprehensive or Third Party?

Third Party being £849 cheaper for the 10month accelerator, but which is better for 17 year old on 1st car??

(may be even cheaper when I call them when I'm looking to get insurance ;))

Might be better off selling and buying a 1 litre petrol I'm afraid :(

Might be better off selling and buying a 1 litre petrol I'm afraid :(

X2 I'm 16 and 17 soon i got a quote with co-op set it as i just turned 17 about 2 weeks ago and had passed my test so full uk put it down as my dad as main driver and me named this is on a mk3 polo 1.0 and fully comp for 12 month and its £707 :)

  • Author

Aye my dad said that too :D

Only reason I have the 1.9 Diesel is because I was saving a good car from being scrapped :lol:

Paid £75 for it with no TAX/MOT...

At the moment I can see that its only needing- Power Steering Hose, Exhaust BackBox and 2 Rear tyres... Possibly front suspention looked at or lifted 10mm

I'll most likely clean it up Get it MOT'd and sell it for a nice profit and but myself a 1litre :p

Ok so I compare (with elephant.co.uk) with my 1.9D and a 1.0 Polo heres what I get..

Both have both my parents as named drivers

1.0 Litre Polo:

Comprehensive - £3076.95

Third Party F&T - £2268.02

my 1.9D Polo:

Comprehensive - £3378.66

Third Party F&T - £2316.99

Why would a 1.0 against a 1.9 only be £100-300 cheaper :oops:

Plus both are still above £2k

Insurance is expensive these days.

Wouldnt bother declaring mods if youve only lowerd it.

Try tesco value insurance and tesco normal car insuarnce. seriosuly try both.. sometimes normal is cheaper.

And it helps if you say your car is garaged even if you have a garage and dont use it. Thats what i do.. lol

But a long shot .. but you didnt ride a 50cc round for a year and get a years no claims off it did you? cause tesco accept years no claims on a motorbike (only insuarnce provider to do this) and it drops by about £500.

I didn't declare the mods on the quotes above :)

I tried the normal one, saw it on a reciept i had... it was over £6k.. crazy (probably did something wrong in there :lol:)

You know surprisingly I tried that but with elephant saying that it was on the driveway was £150 cheaper than saying it was in the garage :D

Just hope that once its through an MOT and I'm phoning the insurance companies there would be a nice price difference :lol:

Lowest quote I had with Third Part F&T was £2297.76 with co-op

Another option is my dad insure in his name and me as a named driver... But who knows, I'll spend more time when I'm actually looking for insurance :D

But intill then I'll just have to keep saving up my pennies :lol::lol:

try performance direct you are all going after the well known companies ill be going with performance direct on my next insuring year if they give me a nice competitive quote

I'm 20 now but try admiral, they're really good, went with direct line for the first year and it was like £1000, then crashed and had to claim... so second year they wanted more so i went online and checked admiral and got quote somethin like £600. then someone from the company called me, was chattin to the lady on and off for 3 days, ended up puttin my dad on it as a 2nd driver and got it down to £386. you've really got to call up and haggle. prices also vary depending on where you stay, where your car is kept etc etc.
