98' Polo 1.4 16v - £800!

Featured Replies

Ok so after buying this car as a little project to get it tarted up a bit I have realised I cant carry out the work I'd like to.

It involves leaving the car at home while sorting things and I cant do that as i need a car to get me to and from work.

This car is also a possibility up for breaking if no one shows any interest in the car, it has a few problems that need addressing mainly bodywork issues.

So basic stuff;

Its an 1998 model in dark blue (paint code LC5H).

Sunroof model also, all the seals are spot on and no leaks have had a joy using it during summer so far.

Its taxed and tested for another 9 months if i remember correctly will double check soon.

As i said above i bought it with the intention of restoring its bodywork, Ill tell you right now this car is NO MINTER, its ideal for someone who wants to take a solidly based car and turn it into track car or even show car depending on what your looking for.

The gearbox has developed a rattle and i haven't been driving it since this has occured (dont want to cause more damage) this just happened last week, the noise goes away when i dip the clutch so i've been told its more than likely going to be a thrust/clutch release bearing and afaik they arent too expensive to sort. Mechanically the engine is sound and is a low milage for a 98'. Its the 1.4 16v AFH 100bhp which has just spyed over 75k miles. It has a K&N filter on it although i did have the intention of taking this off. The exhaust is a hidden one, nothing fancy tbh.

Of course the car has extras, obviously its going to be marmite when you see the wheels but obviously they can be changed of course.

Anyhow;

Coilovers are on the car. The wheels were professionally powdercoated in 'Traffic Purple' and 'Baby Blue' it certainly is a headturning car when it wears these boots, some people think its the most ugly thing they have ever seen others think its great that its different. Obviously most girls love it cause it looks pink to them. It has mk5 rear tail lights which do not leak so do not worry. Hid lights very bright at night. It did have clear indicators although one was cracked and i couldnt bear to leave them like this so i swapped them for amber indicators for the time being. The FK debaged grille is pretty much brand new not been on the car that long as it was missing when i purchased the car. The previous owner scraped the back bumper against something by the looks of things but its just a case of sanding down and spraying (again I'm not a bodywork handyman so i wouldnt think about having a go at it - leave it to the pros!)

It has a fair few 'dub' stickers on it if you will nothing over the top but at the same time nothing that cant be removed either i guess some people like them, others dont. It has a Zender rear spoiler which i've been told is hard to get a hold of?

Moving inside the car it could be the crucial selling point of the car. Its bears very rare mk3 Golf GTi optional extra recaros. These seats are mint, in fact the whole interior is pretty much mint, its very good condition inside and no real signs of wear or tear. It has a carbon gearknob which looks very oem+ at first i thought it was a wrapped original one but its actually a carbon one! Standard steering wheel, the car does NOT have air-con to let anyone know. The heater controls work fine, it warms up as it should and goes on a nice cold breeze too. No lights showing on the dash either. It has a stealth shelf in the back with pioneer speakers which are VERY good quality, very bassy for 6x9s so no real need for a subwoofer either. Stealthshelf just makes it look a lot cleaner, cant stand seeing the speakers poking out of the parcel shelf looks very tacky imo but same can be said about the wheels in others opinions! lol.

Now for the bad bits and as you will have heard many a time - every car has one.

Bearing in mind the car is just over 12 years old now its not really doing bad for itself.

The strongest points about this car are the mechanical wise (bar releasebearing i explained earlier) and the interior.

Its the bodywork that needs the most attention. Now me being silly and not paying attention few weeks ago i manged to scrape my bumper off a stone wall while trying to squeeze through a space. Not the greatest of moves but oh well its happened.

The front bumper is needing replaced although I have one sitting here which has the top grilles smoothed out which ill chuck in too for a little extra if the price is right and of course the scraped one will be on too which can be repaired the bodyshop told me, but as I like things to be done right i forked on a new bumper for it.

There are a few patches of rust where the previous owner has tried to spray over but not done a very good job at all almost leaving a matt paint affect but you cant see it from a distance only when looking close up. Its along the driverside rear arch. There is not really any surface rust its just where its tried to be touched up it looks bad from my point of view anyway.

The tyres are all good, just recently put two brand new ones on the front to add.

So main things that need done are:

Rust patches need painted properly.

Front bumper replaced (as said ill supply with new freshly painted one with smoothed top grilles)

Back bumper sprayed.

Finally the window regulator packed in this week so I'm on the lookout for a new one, if i can source one before sale ill fit it for you.

Sorry for the 'story' if you will, I leave you with some pictures of the car. Ill try get interior ones up too at some point.

I'm based up in Aberdeen in Scotland however i can possibly travel down to make things easier.

*Please not this interior shot is not MY CAR its a member on here who has the same seats so you can see what they are like*

Anyhow forum rules state a price MUST be stated so, Price wise I'm looking for close to the 1k mark but obviously the car is only worth what someone is willing to pay, so there for I'm open to sensible offers. I'm hoping this car will go to someone who will sort out the troubles i have pointed out and turn it into something show stopping.

Any queries contact me
