hi, i have a polo 3 door 1999 CL and need to reset the ECU compleatly, how do i do it my self? anyone help me please? thanks very much )

as far as i know lad, just disconnect the battery for bou 20 min, leave the interior light on to use up any power that would still be left in the system. after reconnect the battery, start it up, leave it idleing for half an hour and then drive the car normaly for a wee while. I'm trainng as mechanic and thats what our instructor said to do.

I've never done it myself so i cant garuntee it, but one of the lads said it works.

We need to know why you think that you have to 're-set' it. What's the matter with it? Doing what Hargy90 says may well do all that you want.

caretakerplus, well iv been reading about ecu resetting on the web and heard its good t reset it every few years because it helps with the performance and retunes the car again. well i didnt see much difference in my car but maybe it doesnt work ) or if it did i didnt see it as much.

the most "resetting" an ecu can do is clear fault codes and you need to connect a diagnostic computer to do that (such as VAGCOM). Disconnecting the battery does absolutely nothing. Fault codes will only generally appear if there is something wrong with the car, you fix the problem and then clear the fault code(s). There no reason to do anything otherwise. I do however think it is a good idea to get the fault codes checked every now and then to see if there are any unnoticed problems going on.

thanks for the reply hayesay. well the main reason i wanted to reset it isnt because of any codes really, even thou i dont see any codes on the display atall just the usual spedometer and that. i just wanted to reset all the sensors so it can adjust it again with the ECU like correcting the ammount of fuel the injectors use and all other sensors since its probably been a while anyone has done so. i tried and discunnected the battrey for a long time and didnt find any changes to the car really, and tried that thing they say u know hold down the spedometer and turn the key and stuff hahaha but still didnt see any difference in the car. maybe it doesnt need any , i dont know hahah. but thanks for you are comments guys, very appreciated )

wrong, your only asuming that the faults have not already been fixed. if the faults have been fixed it will clear the fault codes. now if they werent fixed, the fault coades will be flaged up again. thats just common sence.

Reseting the ecu will RESET it back to its factory setup, ecus have the ability to learn, ie. if you fuel pump isnt working rite, not giving enough preasure, your ecu will lenghten the injection period to help give the engine the correct amount of fuel, it will make this change in its "short tem memory".. now if this problem is constantly ocuring it will put this change into its long term "perminent" memory, if you fuel pump is fixed and the orrect presure is there, the ecu will still be putting in the lenghtened injection period, "over fueling" it will correct itself after time, but itl be a long time. the idea behind reseting the ecu is to get rid of any "bad habbits" it would of picked up.

now to put an end to some of this nonsence, YOU WONT NOTICE A DIFFERENCE IN PERFOFMANCE!!!

hi, thanks for you are reply. yea i understand what the ECU does with all the memory storage thing with the performance and keeping it stored, however i just wanted to reset it so just incase if it had some bad storage in its memory, so it can start to store fresh ones when it happens.

well many people say it can help performance and many say it doesnt, so i guess u wont find out till u try it ey.
