5speed box

Featured Replies

Looking for a 5 spd box to give my 1043 some longer legs! Currently running the standard 4 spd box. The box is fine, no known problems changes like a dream, just using her on longish motorway journeys has made me realise I cold do with that extra gear.

anyone help?

Cheers

Well... yes, I guess I am according to my profile.

I should have stated this is for a UK based Polo that resides in Scotland with my son.

I use it when I come back over, I have to attend courses in Aberdeen and prefer not to stay at hotels as I'm only 50 miles down the road from the Granite City, so......

Where are these boxes and what sort of price are you thinking of. Doh!, just re-read your profile location.

I know peeps down that way on another forum (Not Vdub) but we have a magic courier service that enables us to get stuff from one end of country t'other.

I'm due to fly back to Spain on the 27th, then go offshore on the 30th for 4 weeks, so probably arriving back on UK shores sometime in September, probably 2nd week or thereabouts.

The next question is... I know it's relatively easy to change boxes but is there anything I need to do with the linkage?

Does that change with the box?

Is there a step by step guide anywhere on this forum?

Cheers chaps

Hi Jon

If you have a Mk3 (Mk2F) I'm carrying out the same just now, 4 speed to 5 speed. I have read that the ball under the gearstick may need to be trimmed a little on one side to be able to select 5th, but this should be easy to sort.

Things that are different between the boxes are

Front gearbox mount - 5 speed is different to the 4 speed.

ARB - If you have a late Mk3 then you should already have the 5 speed ARB, if not you will need one of these as well.

You may want to change the selector rod seal and bearing while the box is out the car and everything is easy to get at. Other than this it's just a case of removing the driveshafts, securing the engine, remove everything that is connected to the old box, unbolt from the engine, swap then reconnect everything.

This link may help?
