how do you get the rat effect ?

Iv seen the Rat look on many VW's ie the rusty bonnet etc , Can anyone tell me what the right way of doing this is ? or is it as easy as just rubbing it down and leaving it to naturally rust ?

a rusty bonnet doesn't make it "rat" just makes it shit lol. and yeah just chuck paint stripper on it and let it rust!

You mean like this?

big garage size barrel of brake fluid, pour excessively, wait 24hours, pressure wash.

or leave parked on a beach at the low tide mark wait until the tide comes in, wait for tide to bugger off, take big tin of wd40, retrieve car.

also coke is good for stripping anything.

rat is really over done it used to be something different now everyone is doing it!

making good cars look shit imo

real rat takes a long time. not painting your car matt and making your bonnet rusty which is a huge fail tbh

True that a rat isn't just a rusted hood.

But if you want to rust your hood fast, sand it down and pour salt water or vinegar on it and wait for it to rust :)

Why would you want to rat your car,It pisses me off when i kerb my alloy so can you imagine stubbing your toe when you park :-D.

Ratting... it's very popular at the moment and I've seen some great examples and some really poor examples.

The key to a good rat isn't to just make some panels rusty, that merely adds texture. A good rat tells a story or is actually a real rat in and of itself. The best looking rats out there have a cohesive idea behind them rather than just having junk piled onto a scabby car.

So, I would suggest you consider why your car deserves to be ratted, and just what it's story would be. Perhaps it's a car that's been driven all over the world and has only just come back, festooned with bodge repairs and supplies to keep you and it going on the journey. Or perhaps it looks ratty because you've been more concerned with the mechanical aspects and getting it to go faster/more reliably and have just ignored the bodywork letting it fade and rust.

Rat, as I understand it, comes about from having a car that you're more bothered about driving than cleaning. If you just intend to take a shiny car and stick a rusty bonnet on it you're missing the point and a lot of the fun in building a rat car.

As for making panels rusty, the easiest way is to strip the paint off, douse with table salt and leave in your garden for it to get rained on.

buy a bug or a camper thats been in a field for 15years, slap a sweet engine in it, shiney shiney wheels and slam it on the floor, only way you'll have a cool 'rat' imo, newer cars look horseshit covered in rusty panels, stickers and crappy accessories

Rusty bonnet and loads of stickers is just so cool! And a single fog lamp tinited yellow mounted to a roofrack full of cool items like rusty bikes and suitcases.

Rats don't have to be matte, stickers, rusty bonnets and roofracks full of detritus aren't mandatory either. Rat is far more than a VW with fully paid Scene Tax.
