Hi got my mot tomorrow. I put a new wing mirror on the passenger side yesterday and got knocked off last night . But wasn't sure if I needed one . And wanted to find out before I buy a new one lol

as long as you have a rear view and one side your ok.

my drivers mirror was cracked and passed mot on saturday

So if I hav my driver side and rear view it will pas ?

i assumed my mot'r would fail it, or put it as an advisory, but nada, and it was a kosher mot

Isn't it an age specific law? Like side repeaters etc? What car was this? Our '85s would go through because it wasn't legal requirement to even have one fitted as new when they were built. But me thinks the 6n's were always obliged to wear them.

i thought if you had the holes for anything the relevant trim must be there so obviosly if you sourced an after market blank plate id think technically if it cant go there it doesnt have too my old loon passed an mot with no mirrors just an interior one and then passed another with just this little one:

seems to suggest you only need a single wing mirror OR an interior rear view mirror. Which means it should pass with no wing mirrors as long as there is an interior one, doesn't give any different instructions for different age cars or anything. I always thought you had to have a drivers side wing mirror though but maybe not! Best bet is to ring the MOT place you will use and ask them as it's their interpretation of the rules which will determine whether you pass or not, doesn't matter what you think is right or wrong, if the tester doesn't agree you will fail.

When are you going to get a propper car?

Someone broke the passenger mirror off my '96 Escort years back, never got round to fixing it - I had no problem MOTing it several times, never even an advisory. As far as I'm aware, this is properly called a 'parking mirror', and, like reversing lights, is more for the driver's convenience than road safety - and so not checked by the MOT. As long as you've got a method of looking behind you, you're fine. Odd that the shape and size has never been set out in law, but good times for modders...

I've never heard of the need to have trim holes blanked - unless the examiner claims there's a sharp edge exposed which could endanger pedestrians.

I've understood it as being:

Drivers wing mirror is needed and then you can have either the passanger mirror or the interior rear view mirror or both. So you need 2 mirrors in total, 1 being the drivers one.
