Does anyone know if such a thing exists? I know it doesn't make any sense to 99% of people who just want to get to B as quickly as possible, but there must be a fair minority who occasionally want to go somewhere but have a nice drive too.

Mine does avoiding motorways, shortest route etc. but still gives me nothing but A14 and M6 between Cambridge and Birmingham :(

just head in the general direction you want to go, get lost then use the sat nav to find your way

get your missis to navigate, Then ever trip will be the scenic route!

Navicon Sat-navs give you a choice of up to 3 routes (if there is an alternate available). Had mine for a few months now and cant fault it.

If i set it say from carmarthen to manchester it will give me

1) M4 - M5 (very boring, long route)

2) mid wales - builth - llandrindod - new town - chester (fastest and most fun)

3) carmarthen - aberystwyth - machynlleth - mountains - A55 - chester - manchester (scenic)

Just use a go old fashioned road map and plot your route though roads and locations that look nice.. I hope I never have a sat nav takes the fun out of 90% of driving! :-D

saying that, when i went to pick my eaton bits up, we used sat nav and some of the roads it sent us down couldve been mistaken for cycleways!

Do agree on the roadmap tho. A satnav wont show you things of interest on your route like a map will.

Surely the act of following a sat nav would spoil the scenic route? If I'm going a scenic route i aint gonna have some irritating gadget harping on at me like they do.

I hate the annoying things,maps are better for normal travelling (especially combined with the ability to read road signs and the direction of the sun),let alone trying to cruise with your hair down.

i have the volume off and get rach to relay what it says. Combine that with a map as well and we hardly ever get lost! Helps when theres an accident/roadworks too so we can quickly find our way round. Something a satnav wont do yet.

could always take sat nav but dont turn it on drive where you like (if somewhere looks nice head towards it) for aslong as you like, then when your ready put satnav on for home. job done

mine took me on a nice road through the north york moors the other week lots of camera opportunities

Yeah maps are all very well but I can't read a map and drive safely at the same time! I usually do the "get lost" way but in places I'm not familiar with I usually can't even manage anything like the right general direction.

And I can manage just fine listening to a sat nav every few minutes and enjoying the drive! It's a lot better than pulling over to look at a map every 10 minutes.

I guess I just need to find a passenger who can read a map lol

a483 from cross-hands (heg123s) house, up thru newton and welshpool, has to be one of my favourite drives ever. absolutely epic, was like 60 miles of rally stages.

I don't really know much about how they work, but surely the satellite doesn't care whether you're in a builtup area?

Talking of "middle of nowhere", I was driving up the M6 and the map just stopped, edged closer to the abyss until it didn't know where the hell we were. On the M6!!

Its like that with my phone around here, so signal at work no signal untill i get to a main road (5 miles away lol)

Get a Garmin. In the dead of night, leaving Stanstead airport, it insisted that the best way to get back to Birmingham was the A507, a non-primary, unlit A road!!!!!!!
