Top mounts swap on a mk2

Featured Replies

The guy that I bought my breadvan off said that he had uprated the front suspension with mk2 golf parts. Should I believe him, would they even fit?

The reason I ask is because my top mounts are super worn and I need to replace them, and firstly of course I need to figure out which mounts to get and secondly I need to figure out the quickest and most painless way to swap them for new ones.

Cheers all

cool mate, thats the answer I was after!

What one would you say it was from GSF?

457VG0060 STRUT TOP MOUNTING-MODIF. PO >7/94 8.50 Add

457VG0080 STRUT TOP MOUNT PO;PO CLASSIC/VARIENT 9.90 Add

may get them from ebay if they are the same as golf mk2 ones. can probably pick them up for less than gsf.

i ordered mine from euro car parts come the next day :D

While your there it may be worth while picking up the tool to get the top nut off. I did, makes life a bit easier.

Spoke to a guy at vw today, he said it could just be the bump stops that are worn. Would the part that GSF (or eBay for that matter) include that? Or would it just be the bearings..?

He also said I shouldn't be doing that myself as when the spring releases tension it could have my eye out. Anyone got any tips for me on avaoiding this minor mishap?

Cheers

Are these what I need..? Do they look like they have the bump stops? I'm being a retard- I don't want to buy the wrong parts though..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-POLO-MK2-MK3-G40-...=item335dc8888b

these are all the parts you need i should think..

regarding doing the job yourself the springs can be rather dangerous, it is possible to undo the setup from the top though and lower the strut down on a jack whilst doing so..

i have usually just used a bit of rope and a couple of clamps do take the tension out of the spring whilst doing the suspension

Drivers top mount is worn.

Springs use spring compressors. I would replace the bump stops as your there anyway.

Had it on a lift the other day, both sides are worn in fact. Just bought 2 x kits as above from eBay, so when they arrive I'll get them fitted.

Have you got a spring compressor at all? could I borrow it for a few?

Cheers

Once you get the spring compressers on it,ll be well easy mate. Your be suprized how easy it is. Good luck

You dont need spring compressors, simply undo the top mounts, and castle nuts under them, with the car on the ground - then jack the front end up. You use the car's weight as a spring compressor. Refit is the opposite of removal.

I take it you've done this successfully, yeah? If so, its all easy to get it back together, right? I don'rt wanna get stuck in the middle of the job!

I take it I need to disconnect the bottom of the shock as well? Or can I undo the top, slot out the old parts and slot the new bits in? I hope so!

The latter, yes. When its jacked up,there is enough room to swap the top mounts over. It is a fiddly operation, but it saves you so much time by only having to do a fraction of the work that its far preferable.

Hi Mikey

have gone to do this wee job today- and encountered my fiurst problem. When I turn the top bolt to start undoing the assembly the strut turns too. Does this indicate a more serious fault? How would I go about getting the bolt undone?

anyone?

Simple solution here, use a deep ringed spanner on the nut, which will leave the top of the strut free. This has a nut/bolt head, which you then use another spanner to hold still.

Should be enough to enable you to unstuck the top nut :-) just make sure you use good fitting spanner as they are easy to damage

also try not to keep turning the whole strut with ring spanner as this can later cause shock leaks by cutting into the seal when turning the shocks piston.

Duly noted. Another tool to buy then. Cheers guys.

What sort of spanner would you recomend? Trying to use an adjustable spanner on the top of the strut. Its loosened it off but its got a tight spot I can't get past. It feels like its going to damage the top of the strut if I put any more pressure on.

I think its a 6mm width- obviously I can't use a socet and my 6mm spanner is so puny it'll snap it.

Help!!!! I'm stuck mid job now!!

Many thanks to Daryl for coming to the rescue.

I managed to do it back up and ended up heading to his lockup and we did it using his air gun.

For anyone attempting this in the future, use plenty of wd40/plusgas on the top thread and get as good a spanner as you can to hold the top of the strut from spinning.
