hello I'm going to be in the looking to buy a 6n polo in next few weeks and have been looking on a 1.4 or 1.6 8 valve would ideally like a 16 valve but dont see many for sale in my price range and that isnt too far to travel . What would u guys say the 1.4 8v and 1.6 8v are like on performance ? As how nippy / quick are they ? As i do motorway miles and dont want something to be too gutless . :(

Obviouslly i will be doing a few mods on it after but nothing too serious just a full exhaust system air filter and handaling mods .

the 1.6 is quicker but id have the 1.4 16v. keep looking mate one will crop up at some point

well, I've driven one and the feal pretty nippy but I'm sure they are pretty gutless past about 85-90 a 1.6 would have abit balls

as i thought then a 1.6 is looking the way forward :) well i would love the time to wait for a 16valver but i dont have the time as my laguna is really dieing so need a motor within a month really so guess il just go 1.6 8v . Even tho my mk2 polo i had which was 25 years old did get to 90 lol so it depends what i see around at the time

not looking for anything that old tbh , as cant be dealing with older car problems no offence to thoses older car owners , il be traveling up and down the m6 a bit so need something a bit modern(ish)

if your set on a 6n, dont restrict your search to local ones. You could end up just buying a dog because its close. sometimes the best cars are worth traveling for.

i know that mate no offence as i have recentlly been converted to VAG'S but its the picking up option when you cant get people to drive u far to go look @ a motor

Thats just not true!... iv driven both and can say a 1.6 has noticable power at the top end compared to a 1.4... Thats not to say they are fast in the general swing of things

They are pretty nippy, but run out of steam fast. I have a 1.6 8v, my brother a 1.4 8v and there isn't much in it. His is stripped out though, and its an L-spec model, whereas mine has all the electric shizzle, and sunroof.

So did I. I didn't notice the Gti badge until I got into town, mind they could've been in 4th when I was booting it in 3rd, it's not a fair comparison.

i find that hard to believe too as i used to have a 206 gti my self on 52 plate and standard they are 138 bhp a 2.0 16v mmmm unless he wasnt really trying lol.

well I'm trying to decide what to get as i have a budget of around £800 but il be doing local driving and long distance but long distance wont be that much as 2 - 3 hours at a time , so dnt know really what to get as i would love a 1.4 16v but they are harder to find and will need something to fit what i need in about 3 - 4 weeks time ....

1.4 8v absolutly fine for motorway driving, I mean obviosuly the best thing for the motorway is a diesel but the polo will cruise at 80 easily and not to thirsty either,

I had a bmc kit on mine and definalty felt as fast as my old zetec s (peice of shit) but thats probally also due to it being so low :)

exactly, he did say down country lanes! not a 1/4 mile straight! I've kept up with plenty of cars that would rinse me on a straight line........but unfortunatly we live in england not america so straight line speed is the best thing since sliced bread,

I think the 16 valvers are horrible on motorways. The short gear ratios are noisy at 70+

The 1.4's aren't that great on motorways either, my diesel 6n is great on the motorways but no one really likes the diesels...I'm so uncool. ha

my 1.6 is good on the motorway,nippy around town too as it pulls well at low revs

the valver has more scope as far as gaining horses if needed,isnt a huge amount you can do with the 1.6

tbh small oldish cars like these arnt going to be a dream on the motorway but id get a 1.4 16v if you want fun if your not too bothered just get the 1.6 :/ but the trips worth it if your going to need to travel for a valver imo
