Polo show? You've missed it mate!

Ideally pop the springs out and cut them both equally, but could be an arse about seeing as you'll never get it right first time.

Search the forum and web - good topics on the subject are about, but also arguments. Calculated trimming of the spring so that it still suits the damper, spring seat, and car's weight can do nothing but improve the car safely and legally.

Go chopping too much off and you can end up with a dangerous car that the MoT inspector could refuse to let you drive away.

as said, polo show was last weekend and don't chop too much off or you will die.

fool. you saw what happened to my shockers joe. and i know you aint got no skill with a grinder. just save your pennies and get a decent kit.

Don't use a grinder as it'll promote cracking in the spring.

dint means polo show, meant vw show... haaa

If it's for a show just use clamps while its parked up? wouldnt drive on them tho :retard:

if u cut them its an MOT failure! and spring wont sit right. i wouldn't recommend it bud..

Err no it's not.

Err no it's not.

i think its a mot fail if,

when the wheels are raised the spring is loose

however cutting the springs too much cn be dangerous esp. on high speeds, as the spring can pop out o its place...very dangerous

a less dangerous way is to heat up the springs....

your right, it's only an mot fail if the spring drops out of the cup when the car is raised (just like with lowering springs), as long as they don't drop out its not a fail, if you do chop them so short that they fall out you can weld them in to the cups and it will no longer fail an mot.

have you ever seen a spring 'pop' out? no you haven't because it's wrapped around a shaft, how can it possibly fall out?

i have thrashed many car's with chopped springs, never have i had an issue with them doing any thing untoward :?

ahhh

yes you are right...they wont popout on a polo...was thinking about cars that have spring located separate to the rear shocks..ma bad

even so the compression rate of a spring jumpin out will snap the suspension strut most likely in 2 causing the car to completely collapse

SO EITHER WAY AND THIS GO TO ANYONE, DONT BE A PIKEY AND CUT you are SPRINGS SAVE you are PENNIES AND BUY A LOWERING KIT

IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE

I very very very much doubt that would ever happen lol. Can you seriously see a spring going through 7-10mm of solid chromed steel? I can't....

I've cut springs in the past (were coilovers anyway, seperate spring/damper on rears, which i cut) passed an MOT, I'm not dead because of doing it and no kittens were harmed because of it, FACTS

seriously, have you been smoking crack?

that has got to be the most over exaggerated piece of bullshit i have ever heard in relation to chopping springs (and i've heard a lot of over exaggerated bullshit about chopping springs in my time lol).

but i'm intrigued, so please give me some evidence to back up this crazy scenario, or did a friend of your uncles girlfriends brother tell you about it happening to some one he once talked to on the internet?

I've taken a spring to the face after knocking the fuck out a seized top mount. It didn't break my face, so there's a good chance it won't break a damper piston rod.

To be fair though, your face is a composite of carbon and crushed unicorn horns

I've used 4 cable ties as spring compressors before, if they can't break some bits of plastics, I can't seeing it breaking a damper.

i ran chopped springs for over 40000 miles on standard shocks before getting my koni kit and never had any problems

if your not careful and cut too much off you will get problems. but I've never seen a strut snap because of a chopped spring

even so the compression rate of a spring jumpin out will snap the suspension strut most likely in 2 causing the car to completely collapse

You should be a politician feeding people with your ignorant and inflated critical speculation like that.

I've been running 'chopped' springs for the last five years, and my only experience of a spring failing in that time is of my mums totally standard 06 Corsa which had spring failure - that didn't snap its hardened steel strut so i dont see how a dislodged spring could.

Maybe you've just been fed some shit and are passing it on,but otherwise you might wanna re-word things in future so they come across as opinion instead of scaremongering in order to be taken seriously.

I work for a classic car restoration company we'v had people bring in cars with chopped springs and then heated the springs up and bent them to re-create the flat spring seat.... we ALWAYS change them. and would recommend not to run with chopped springs.

however reading reviews it seams many people do it and have had no probs. so we prob replace them so we dont get any warranty come backs.

correct me if I'm wrong but puttin toughened steel in a major heat cycle actually weakens them. and with all these contrasting views ask your self "which is the safest way" best of luck to u.

^the fact that those chopped springs were still on the cars and hadn't failed should give you some kind of clue as to how dangerous they were?
