2008 VW Polo - Changing headlights (complete unit)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2008 VW Polo 1.4 automatic, 5-door (80PS). Purchased in UK as first owner in 2008; imported to Switzerland and I am considering to register the car in Switzerland. It needs to pass the technical inspections and requirements.

Since they drive on the right hand side of the road, the direction of the beam of a UK car's headlights are not correct (they illuminate the left hand side of the road and that blinds the drivers of the opposite direction when driven in Switzerland). I was recommended to change the headlight units on both sides replacing with locally sourced ones.

Question 1) is it possible to modify the current headlights and not changing the whole units? Could be bits of the unit reused?

Question 2) how difficult to modify/replace the headlight units? The units cost quite a bit from VAG so potentially wanted to save money on dealer labour cost.

Has anyone replaced headlights on this model? I used to own a MK2 Golf GTI and could do this half asleep but have not worked on any modern cars.

Many thanks for any advice.

cheers

Andras

Hi

It is possible to modify the beam, and this is done by getting hold of some headlight protectors and sticking beamblocker sticker to them

The problem with this is that it doesn't block the beam from all angles and is really a temporary solution

Your best bet is to get hold of some lhd units and swap them over, how ever it is fairly involved to change them over as the front bumper must come off, and as this is German engineered it has a fair few bolts holding it on

Iirc 4 in each wheel well 3 for the grille 3 under the grille 1 behind each foglight grille 3 or 4 clips under neath and the lower engine cover needs to come off, so you would need a jack

Hope this helps !
