Hey all. I have a mk 1.6 CL (N reg if that helps) And my central locking works when it wants to which is more or less never but it does work occasionally. I have used the search function for this and as far as I see it's people with 6n2 lights and water getting into them which I don't have (even though I'd like them at some point as my car's "Red" (Faded)) I'm really not good with these things so a Detailed sort of guide on how to find out what's faulty and how to fix/replace it that'd be awesome.

I'll try to keep this simple.

It is probably one of three things that your C/L system is failing on:

1) A door switch.

2) Pump assembly failure.

3) An air leak.

Does it tend to work (when it works at all) better from one door than the other. If it does, it could be the switch on the 'other' door that is at fault.

You would need to take the trim panel off of the inside of the door to access it.

Can you hear the pump working, even if the locks don't work? If you can't hear it, then it is probably the pump assembly which is failing. If you can hear it, does it tend to run for what seems like a longer period than you would expect it to? it the answer to this is 'yes', then can you hear what sounds like air escaping, either on the doors (including the boot) or near the motor, which is located in the 'off' side of the boot lining below the first aid box holder (white cross on a green background) or on the 'rubber' gaiters near to the door hinges.

Of all of the above, the easiest one to deal with is the pump itself, as you don't require any tools to remove it with. So if you can borrow one from another car, you could test yours by substitution. ( Just take care when removing the bayonet type pipe connector.)
