My 6n will be getting abit of work over the next 3 weeks and i was thinking of getting the middle box of the exhaust cut out and replacing it with a straight pipe, so it will be cat - pipe - standard backbox, is it worth doing and will it change the exhaust sound?

If i was you id buy a second exhaust pipe , cat back, and cut the cat out aswel as the mid box, Will make it sound better, wont be too loud and should be pretty cheap.

personaly id do simular, except id cut out the cat, leave the mid box and remove the backbox, itls sound nice, trust me

Cat back meaning everything apart from the manifold and downpipe, Thats cat back aint it?

Also, i wouldnt do that, iv had an exhaust pipe on my mk3 which just consisted of a mid box, sounds like a bag of bull.

Keep the backbox , loose the cat and midbox if your not wanting it to be BUUURRRRRRRRIIINNNNG! all the time lol.

downpipe? jesus man your readin way do much max power. a downpipe is specific to a turbo set up. and cat-back literaly refures to from the end of the cat all the way out, including evrything on the way.

cat back sstems generaly have a bigger pipe than standard.. its just wone of those terms used in the pub by people who dont know.. a s/s cat-back system means the leave the cat there and from the manifold standard. but from the cat out would be s/s.

wel my 1.0L 6n has no cat, hust a mid box and a wee mufler tip, and its lovely, deep at low revs in a high gear, keep a shight rev and it gos abit quieter so it doesnt bust me head driven main roads. and when you drop it 2 and giv her shoe the sounds like a pissed off wasp

i imagine you should just go for straight pipes from cat , probs will be mega loud! with the standard box on it will just sound like its blowing really :/

Downpipe is the name we use for the part of the exhaust that travels DOWN after the manifold. Some have the cat welded on afterwards, Some downpipes have the cat seperate.

if its seperait to the manifold its a downpipe, such as a turbo'd set up. if its one piece from the smanifolt to the cat, its just a manifold.. wel thats what we go by over here anyway. eng was always abit confusin,

on my mk3 polo i chopped out the center silencer and put a straight pipe in and it was hellish loud! I would just save up and get a custom exhaust done!

Removing the centre box is always good,and use an exhaust from a 6n/2 with a bigger engine. Cheap as chips from a breakers,less restricting,easy life.

My downpipe is from a 6n,my centre pipe is from a 206,my back box is from an Astra. You wanna get yourself a welder,mate.

Cos its a 16v manifold and downpipe so i had to find a centre pipe with a suitable bore,which turned out to be from a 206 HDi.

Used a G40 rear section but needed a bigger silencer as the G40 one i had was too raspy and i dont like that noise,so i got one from a '98 Astra 1.6 16v as it was the best fit (and looks stock).

Works well,sounds quiet enough. The carbs on the valver dont sound half as loud as they did on the 8v but the exhaust is still quieter.
