Mk3 Golf GTI 8v

Featured Replies

I know they were crap, but can anyone remember how many BHP's these have? Seem to think they're a 115bhp 2litre?

Rough fuel economy would be good too if anyone's had one?

A 16-valve version of the third-generation Golf GTI was introduced in 1993. The engine was enlarged to 2.0 L, with power now reaching 150 PS (110 kW/148 hp). While underpowered compared to the VR6, it was still relatively popular with driving enthusiasts in Europe (North America did not get the proper GTI version, but had the name applied to the VR6 engine). Once again the Golf Driver version took its place as the official GTI-look-alike but with a more humble single-point injected 1.8 L engine.

115 bhp 2.0 is correct. Fuel economy, I've heard a lot of people say they are poor, but their cars can't have been working properly. I borrowed a B4 Passat estate with the same 2.0 8v in it for a week and managed to average 38 mpg in it, not driving particularly slowly. Should be looking at an easy 40 mpg on a run.

And to be fair, a Mk3 8v isn't the worst car in the world. They are slightly nippy, quite economical, very comfortable, well built, reliable, have good brakes, handling isn't too bad but a bit woolen.

Cheers chaps, the car's crusty as can be, but I had an inkling the engine would go nicely in something older, lighter and wedgier :)

Just the old wiring thing to suss out. Any ideas what management they're on?

40mpg+ on a run is easily doable on a healthy one. Most run a Siemens ECU - there's an immo to deal with there, but not really an issue if you have a donor car.

Key chip that turns the fuel pump off or something more dastardly?

i know you can run early 2e s with mk2 digifants. i tihnk the same motors in seat toledos and shit , so might bring down the insruace when you declare it?

Key chip that turns the fuel pump off or something more dastardly?

Key paired with immo box, in turn paired with ECU. So use the immo box too with the donor key.

Just tape the donor key to the immobiliser transmitter thing and place it somewhere in the car. You could always take the key away if you want some immobiliser action.

use the 2.0 bottom end from the mk3 gti 8v, paired with a mk2 gti 8v digifant head, means in effect you have a 2.0 8v mk2 gti.

Digifant head is better and you use digi managment so it's easier to put in an older car.

We did it with my mate's mk2 golf, but used a TSR pack A head a cam, went well.

I did think about suggesting using a PB head and Digi 2, but I think Yeti is only contemplating the conversion if he can use the entire engine and management?

you could run the mk3 golf fuse box in your car as well as your own and just run the engine off this, this is what i've done in my polo and it makes the conversion pretty much plug and play

you can also (dependent one what sort of key you have) put the chip in your key and use the immobilizer as it should be used. i took the chip from the mk4 key, cut a hole in my key the same size as the chip, them plastic welded it into the hole.

I know how id fuel it. Huge torque increase and better fuel economy over the EFi, would sound very fruity though and not everyone likes that, but a double-skinned induction could help. I'll get shot down for the theorised claim without doing it,but i thought id throw the thought in.

Yes i might have to do it myself, considerations have gone into aquiring a 4/5dr car and as a result a MK2 Golf/Jetta with 2.0 8v on big bike carbs is looking the most likely candidate if its gonna be a VW.

jetta all the way mikey! 8-)

I'd be skeptical on the big bike carbs being economical, they're not generally when they're fitted on big bikes.

I dunno, most bigger bikes can do good average MPG, I got 110miles to 10quids worth of petrol on my old ZX7R's, they were 750's, that was ragging it a fair bit. All depends how you ride/drive in all fairness as well!

Probably so, thing for me with bike economy is that the only bike I've ever lived with for a long time is a Superdream. 250cc 4 stroke, yeah, it's not fast (think you can ride them on a provisional these days?), but 70mpg all day every day takes a bit of beating. Only thing I ever found that was cheaper to run was a Peugeot 205 derv.

Out of a decent one I can't see why you'd not get 40mpg. Decent enough engine for something to kick about in. Won't set the world on fire but would make a decent little motor.

Just knocked it on the head. With the amount of Mk2 bits I'd need and the exhaust making, and the possible problem of the extra 18mm block heightm I might as well just put a Mk2 8v gti in.

Thanks anway, love you all.

Not a lame choice, the Rocco is about the weight of a 6n so the lively 1.8 GTi should work well - the Scala was the bollocks in its day.

I wonder how much lighter a little yet more powerful 1.6mpi 16v small block would be,and how the Rocco would handle with it? Oh shut up Mikey..

Sciroccos are nice and light and do take well to a nice engine swap, the 16v rocco was the only officially sub-7 second to 60 car that VW made until they released the Mk4 R32!

And yeah, the 1.8 Scala injections make a great car.

Corrado vr6 had an official sub seven sec 0-60 did't it?

But still, the 8v gti will still be good in a scirocco

Yep, god knows where I conjured that bullshit up from.
