water pump squeaks, should there be ANY play in it?

Basically just changed the 1093 GG unit in my mk1 golf for a 1272 GG. Noticed a bit of a squeak when twisting the timing belt to check tension. Then noticed it seems to be coming from the water pump, the pump has a small amount of play in it, which increases with temperature. Is this acceptable? or is it due for replacement, I should have put a brand new one on when i did the belt etc :roll:
