What stops having a bad back when driving far?

Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm going to have to drive from Cornwall to Reading in like 4 days and its going to be like a 4-5 hour drive up there and I usually get a bad aching back after driving for more then an hour straight does anyone else get this? Just wondering if anyone had anything that stopped it? Or could suggest anything that helps make the ride a lot smoother and comfortable when driving?

oh and btw I'm driving a 6n.

Cheers!

Jamie.

make sure you are sitting properly and not slouching

Beaded seat covers innit :D

i'd go to the doctors mate, i've driven for hours upon hours. Never had any problems.

supportive seats. when i got my first scirocco i had to drive it for about an hour to get it home, it just had the standard poverty spec vw seats in it and it fucking killed my back. i swapped them for corrado seats and have never looked back, they keep getting swapped into what ever car i drive and i've never suffered from a bad back while driving since.

Correct seating position...or a nice set of Recaro's.

as previously stated, just relax when driving..ensure youre not leaning into the steering wheel..other than that, take plenty of short breaks and stretch your legs aty regular intervals.

Oh thanks alot guys appreciate all the opinions and reccomendations will take them into consideration!

Take 2 cushions, 1 to sit on and 1 to put at the bottom of your back. I find this make shit seats a bit comfier and supportive :)

Take a break, have a stretch and a walk about.

Or drive a Transit van - comfiest thing on the road and the only thing I can comfortably drive all day.

I have this but only because I suffered pretty bad wiplash a couple of years back, fucked me up for life :(

But I guess just try what's been said really, check your seating position and take a break if you need to. Cushions sound like a comfy idea though

I hurt my spine in a car accident and get th esame problem regardless of driving time.

I now have to sit like i'm practically laying down, which helps me. Try leaning the back of your seat to a comfortable position whilst making sure you're not slouching.

Another thing that helps is those beaded seat covers.

Hey man i used to get back ache when i was learning to drive, thought it was always gunna be like that when driving lol. But nah i got a 6n2 and the seats are soo much comfier. Maybe it was because i was tense/had the seat in the 'correct' position. Btw are you a tall or short guy?

Decent seats and not being a girl.

friend of mine who needs constant back support was recommended something very similar to this by her physio. I used it for a trip to london in a starlet and worked a treat. don't get sweaty either!

i'd rather have a back that hurts than numb legs  Oh the joys of bucket seats with bugger all padding!

It's all about Lumber support. WHich my shitty standard seats don't have.

Correct adjustment of the seat so it does its job properly. "Gangsta Lean" might look cool to your mates but is probably fucking uncomfortable. Most people don't realise that most VW seats are also height adjustable - at least the driver's seat usually is. My old Mk2 golf had a height adjustable driver's seat, and both the front seats in my 6N are height adjustable.

IIRC MK2/MK3 ones aren't unless they are GT/G40.

Mine definatly isnt height adjustable.

Mine was in a so-called Coupe S

Decent seats. Especially porsche 997 tombstones! Went to essex and back in a day to collect parts and it took about 11 hours. No back ache at all. Best seats ever, comfy, supportive and look mint!

Mine is in a 1.3CL.

I really want a set of Tombstones. Just a case of making the rest of my interior match.

I find adjusting the recliner a tiny bit every half hour or so works a treat, keeps your back changing position
