Insurance quotes, Where do they pull their figures from

Featured Replies

Currently driving a 1.2 Polo - 2003 reg, Worth approximately £2500

My insurance on this is £1500 fully comp.

I am looking at a 1.6 Mitsubishi Colt - 1996 reg worth £300

HOW THE HELL am I getting quoted £2000+ THIRD PARTY???? NOT EVEN FIRE AND THEFT?!?!?!

Where the hell do they get this from. I've been driving 2 and a half years as a named driver, And I'm currently on a policy in my own name.

/RANT OVER

has something this absurd ever happened to you? and does anyone have an explanation as so why it would be so much more (apart from 'biggger engine')

The way they see it, it doesnt matter what your driving your still going to be a risk.

I'm 20 and in the same boat, i feel your pain.

sometimes there is no difference between fully comp and TPFT when the car is of low value but sometimes there is. the same baffled me too when i was getting quoted more for FPFT than fully comp on a 300 pound car.

and insurance will go up with bigger engines. how much would it cost for a renewal. just stick with a small engine for a while.

add your mom and dad to the policy as a named driver

I've just renewed, But want to declare mods (when I do them) and its going to kill my pocket

2 and half years driving experience with no claims, and I cant get a decent price on a £300 car? You can understand why people drive un-insured

i had a mk2 breadvan wich cost me 550 a year tpft the renewal price was double!!! i phoned them up and quickly called them c**ts and told them there is no way I'm paying that, after about half an hour of haggling i got it back to 550, absoloutly ridiculous that they think they can double it, just remember insurance can be haggled down just like everything else so dont be scared and make sure you listen carefully to what they say as its a selling thing that they just chat shit to you really fast so you agree to breakdown cover etc

Catch 22...

It's too expensive to drive cars, so they drive without insurance, which puts premiums up, which they then can't afford...

Also, its not just engine size that affects premiums, it is based on availability of parts, price of said parts, number of accidents in that model of car, how desirable it is for a theif, how easy it is to break into, your postcode etc etc.

also, when i did my insurance this year with admiral, they offered me personal injury cover (on a TPFT) said no (as i didn't have the cash for it at the time) they said i could add it at a later date. few months went by, tried adding personal injury cover and they were like "no, you can't have PI cover on a TPFT" my response was - "Well, upgrade me to FC then, i want what i was told i could have! - PI cover and if i can't have it on TPFT then you need to upgrade me to FC (for free) and i'll pay for the PI cover"

eventually, after listening to the call that i made when i purchased the insurance, they said "as you were advised you can add PI cover, we'll add it for you" - Erm... hang on, I can't have PI cover on TPFT...

Admiral = Complete fuck-up.

I'm 19 drive amk2 breadvan no years no claims. 1 litre and declared all my mods apart from my engine conversion which i will do soon as and insurance is 1500 quid I'm with admiral fully comp with no named drivers. still think 1500 is abit expensive

When I renewed mine on a 1ltre W reg polo, they tried hiking it up by £800. After what seemed an eternity on the phone managed to get it back down to a reasonable figure, and they threw in breakdown cover  now who's laughing?

Its always worth phoning up and making a big deal out of it.

People always moan about paying 5x the value of the car to insure it, but it's very little to do with the value of your car when you get below a certain value (I'd guess around £1k). Think about all the expensive cars on the road and how much damage an accident would cause to them which your insurance company would have to pay for.

The third party part is the expensive bit, which is why TP vs TPFT is a tiny difference, and TPFT vs comp is often very little difference too. The third party bit is by definition nothing to do with the value of your car, which is why it might not make sense how they price it. The insurance company is taking no risk on your car once the premium is above the market value, but they're still taking a big risk on the value of the Range Rover Sport you might write off. So the price is based on you and your car's risk of crashing (ie performance, experience etc), not the car's value.

Hvaent read alll the replies matey, but stick your parents or an older experienced driver/drivers down as named drivers, that will bring the quote down

Only way i could afford to buy a car was:

www.i-kube.co.uk

terms and conditions = pass plus and cant drive between 11pm and 5am (they installed a tracker)

i am 19 and got my 1.4 8v 6n (no mods) insured for £1200 (0 no-claim bonus!)

I really hate not being able to drive late, but it has saved me hundreds!!!

my mate tried get insurance for a 1149 clio, and lowest quote was 3 grand :\

With all due respect mate..that's bollocks..

You would sacrifice your right to drive at night to save yourself some money when there are clearly other loopholes in the system that inevitably save you money..

Who ever has signed up to the system has lost the plot..Your just giving the government even more reason to screw over young drivers..

Its just as bad as GPS tracking all cars so that they cannot exceed speed limits (depending on the given road)..

Was either that, not having a car or worse, drive a 1litre fiat seicento!

I have been working 8am 7 days a week for last 3 months so been going bed relatively early, my parents both have cars, got mates who can drive at night so to me was a no brainer.

I do agree though, its shit... but i have no need to drive between 11 and 5, and other insurers couldnt get close to competing........

and what has the government got to do with this company? :S

at least they are trying to help young driving unlike the mainstream companies fucking us over with ridiculous quotes

Edited by Simple_Jim

Its companies like that, that give government the incentive..

"at least they are trying to help young driving unlike the mainstream companies fucking us over with ridiculous quotes"

are they? or are they trying to find another way to keep tabs on us ;)

Just got my first Polo through the MOT, started checking online for quotes. ecarinsurance modified, as the car is modded, quoted over 2K tpft. Thought they were taking the preverbial as it's a second car (have full noclaims on my main car and my cbr600)and I'm over 40! Got it down to just under 400 with Adrian Flux after spending the whole afternoon phoning round. After all it's only a 1.3 Genesis coupe 1994
