Why wont my 5th gear slot into place?

Featured Replies

Okay guys, so I've been driving around recently and for the past 3 days my car really dislikes trying to get into 5th gear =/ when i try going from 4th to 5th it seems like there is something blocking the way for the gearstick to get into gear =(

I've tried hopping gears e.g. 3rd to 5th but exactly same thing happens. About 1/10 tries it gets into gear. Real hoping this isnt something too expensive. Any ideas? Cheers guys

bump?

Mine sometimes does that on my 1.4 6n....Sometimes it is okay though. What else could it be?

Could just be needing a clutch cable adjustment. I've been learning that the hard way. If you dont know how to adjust the cable, just repost and someone will help you.

Do you have to 'slam' it over to the right to engage it? Cld the gear linkage have come loose? This happened when I replaced my 4 speed with 5, doing a turn in the road on a country lane :-D thank goodness for 700kg cars!

wasn't suggesting that you should 'slam' it btw!

Just an idea here, lift up the centre console flap where the gaiter and gear stick is, now on the gear stick you have an adjustment collar, its the one with an allen screw, put the car in 1st gear and gently push the lever to the left, there should be a gap of between 1-2mm between the reverse gate and the lug on the gear stick, this will be clearer when you look at it. if the gap is different then loosen the allen screw and turn the collar in either direction ie clocwise/anti clockwise, the gap will increase or decrease, adjust till gap is correct.

This should solve your problems fingers crossed.

Mine wont select 5th at the moment but thats mainly due to the rod linkage kunckle joint dissapearing down the road the other day, so i have a very flappy gear stick until this afternoon when i fit a new linkage. Hope this helps.

Yeah i have to use a lil more force to get it into gear now, but its working =/ shouldn't i be doing this?

yeh my 9n does that too but with all the gears :-( i just bring the clutch up slow while applying a little force and she jus slots in nice and smooth dn why it wont change when the clutch is all the way down but i never really bothered to check it as it dosent seem to get any worse

I havnt tried bringing the clutch up slightly before changing into 5th, ill give this a go tomorrow =)

Still would like to know the cause of this though =/

My 6n does it sometimes...could it be coz i have a 1.6 6n g/box on my 1.4? I dont have to slam mine in either, it simply dosent go in...Sometimes its okay but other times it doesnt like it...Its really dissapointing when i am gunning it and it jumps into 3rd when i go to put it in 5th :( Not good...
