Been meaning to do a build thread for weeks now but never had time.

Did have this Polo GT,

But then some prick street racing through a very busy cross roads in my town managed to achieve this with the front end of his punto three days before i was due to put it in to storage for uni after having nearly the whole car resprayed and every dent taken out only a fortnight before.

Soooooo....

Attended Bath Spa uni and came back to Cheshire for my summer job in July. Never really felt like i completed my last GT so bought its twin sister....

On going to view it was identical bar the number plate, even the engine sticker was stuck inside the centre console in the exact place my old GT's sticker was. WEIRD!

So enough talking more info.

Has had two owners, last owner has had it for 17 or 18 years and was an elderly woman, she looked like she was going to cry when i had to go round to get the other half of the log book off her as the guy who had bought it from the local garage had forgot to pick it up from her.

A lad off here called oldskoolmatt from Bolton had bought the car with a blown headgasket and extremley worn clutch. He fixed the problems and i vieweed it the day he advertised it. (Top Blloke and has an awesome mk1 G40 conversion including mk3 Dashboard) Props to you if your reading this Matt.

To say i was happy was an understatement and picked it up the next evening.

heres the car after a good clean at polo show 2010.

After the polo show problems started to arise with it using oil and it came off the road for a week in time for me to hit up V Festival the following weekend.

We knew the head gasket had been done but upon inspection of the timing end we found oil all over the belt and it had sprayed oil all over the timing end of the bay. It was a mess and dangerous.

Ok so we thought it may be the crank or cam seal. Well... we hoped. stripping the timing end down found this,

A lot of things on the engine had been bodged it would seem, heres the shape of the pulley bolts, rounde doff much? they're meant to be star shaped. I wont even tell you how long they took to get off.

TWO of them werent even finger tight, id done 2500 miles in it and I'm lucky things didnt go badly wrong. But hey ho its an old car and rounded bolts is a common occurance as any Mk1 - 3 owners will know.

So everything came off the timing end to be cleaned and re fitted with all fresh bolts including the dodgy pulley bolts.

heres some very brief pictures of re fitting and cleaning the bay up.

Cleaned wing, ish.... You can see the oil on the old belt here. The wing is much cleaner now. as is the rest of the bay.

Timing end cleaned and back together, that pulley was completly black with oil as was the cambelt.

Super shiny :) and clean wing and front panels.

RE psitioned all of the loom and HT cables after putting everything back on as the most part of the loom has been hacked up and was resting on parts of the engine that get very hot.

heres the end result after an hour.

Please note I'm not one for cleaned bays and hammerite/powder coating everything, it doesnt interest me and i prefer it how it is. nice and oem original.

Also cleaned the throttle body out and re sealed the gasket which was meant to cure a slightly high idling issue but unfortunatley hasnt. still, runs ALOT better for it now.

Why it needed cleaning,

Battery appeared to be rubbing on the bonnet hinge and this annoyed me so took it off and my dad chopped it off a bit so we could move it across to prevent the rubbing issue. Turns out the battery is off a citroen. Had it drop tested to make sure its sweet and its 84% good so that will do.

Also found a nice bodge repair on the tray whilst we had it out. it is water tight though and i will sort it at a later date. I dont see it as anything to worry about.

Here she is the night before V Fest in my grandmas car port.

Have drove it to essex and back this weekend to see the ball and chain and its been sweet. no oil drips, smoke, horrible smells, alternator belt squeals or anything.

one last shot of the traffic i ended up in for 2 hours outside the A12 in Essex.

Not an engine running for miles

Did you collect a bonnet from Banbury the weekend of the Polo Show? Did you take your own bonnet off and put in your boot to make sure it went in alright?

It is staying completley standard bar a set of oem wheels and a 50/40 lowering kit.

I dont really want it modified, they're nothing but hassle from my personal experience.

Aaah. I went to collect a GT engine from a bloke breaking a Red GT, he told me a lad from cheshire came down that weekend as he was in the area and collected it! I thought it could be you.

Nah i wouldnt mind knowing who the person was with the red GT, might of been my old one but i sold it to a girl to put in her mk1 golf.

Just got to fix my exhaust as its touching the rear bumper and the little light activator that turns the light on when you open the door. seems to be stuck in after i pressed it in with my fat finger cause i thought it wasnt working

Top gt, looks like original number plates aswell which is a good sign.

Reading this & looking at the pictures is a bit of de javu as my bro & I were last night stripping my polo to do a head gasket & replace the radiator! Lol.

It really highlights how many people know feck all about cars as there are signs all around my car of small bodge jobs, nothing major or dangerous, but just such simple things that haven't been done properly!! But that is the risk of buying a second hand car, not even ones that are 3 months old can always be taken at face value.

I'm so glad I didn't sell my GT to you earlier this year as the amount of problems I've fixed on it is ridiculous!

Good to see you back in a GT mate, it looks like a little gem on the outside, those few little bits won't take much work to rectify then you'll have a mint little polo

Such a small job but takes so long when things are bodged as you say. I just had a flick through your thread and I'm glad as well, all things you cant tell until its too late as well really.

It really is a dream to drive. so smooth. Glad i held out for a good one. :)

More progress tonight with my exhaust, what a mare that was to sort. pictures to follow.

My exhaust has been hitting the rear bumper of my car for a few days now and never really looked right when i bought it. took it up to my friends ramps yesterday to have a look what was wrong.

the problems...

Pipe where it enters the backbox was split.

One of the rubbers was snapped allowing for a lot more flex than normal, no doubt this may have caused the pipe to split at the backbox end.

so the following happened.

one new rubber, and welded the old backbox up. where the split was, as well as the whole area to make sure no where else splits in the place at a later date.

Next me and my dad decided that the exhaust is so long from the cat to the backbox with no rubbers in between that we would strentgthen the backbox area with a welded in extra piece.

So my dad and his friend got the grinder out to create a plate.

Then it was welded to the backbox,

Drives much smoother and sits perfectly now.

the ra's could idealy do with a referb tbh, just scabby paint on 2 of the wheels, but theres not dents, damage ect. tyres are good.

@Jimmy7 - Thanks dude, I've learnt my lesson from rushing in to buying cars. The first one i bought after my other red one was the first one i viewed and blew up on the way home, bottom end went and the headgasket all in 6 miles. luckily the seller took it back. POS!

@Matt - give me a shout when you have the time for me to come look at them mate, I'm free tonight and not doing anything as far as i know. You haven't bought that horrible vanilla mk3 i saw outside rthompsons yesterday? noooooooooooooooooo :p

@Doug, your GT was the reason i bought mine after a ride in rolo's taxi. If you can remember i liked it so much i went to view it but it had no oil in and no 5th gear and all the carpet6s were drenched. list goes on, still have over 20 photos of yours on my hardrive that i look at for insparation :)

I'm glad you like it haha its a shame that it ended up like that coz i loved that car :( i sold it cheap hoping that someone would do it up but probably wasnt to be.

saw it for sale on here advertised by volksbretta exactly the same as i sold it for £1000 though when trying to sell it was saying that he'd done all the stuff to it that i'd had done coz i sold it with the receipts etc..... joker

maybe will get a g40 one day and finish the job. i do a lot of miles coz i live in portsmouth now though and my girlfriend lives up north so i dont think a mk3 would be an ideal motorway tool :(

yeah vinalla mk3, got rid of the mk2 as i love mk3s to much. it wont be staying vinila for long, and the arches are getting chopped off.

Eurgh!! What a shitter. Was there any symptoms on the gearbox or did it just crap its pants?
