Unfortunately time has come to sell my mk1. I have spent an absolute fortune on this (Probably around £3500!). The prices of these seem to have risen quite considerably too, as they become more and more desirable classics (anyone who went to edition38 will realise all of the nicest cars were mk1's!!).

Anyway, this started out as a standard tidy little 1.3 litre 1983 mk1 golf. Its got BMW wheels in Magnolia with a diamond cut lip and stretched tyres with plenty of tread. It's currenly lowered on coilovers. It has HID's (standard mk1 headlights are terrible!), electric windows, remote central locking, smoothed boot, all-red rear lights, new splitter, legal pressed plates, an old-school Alpine head unit with JBL door speakers, a nice little steering wheel and much more i've probably forgotten about.

The brakes consist of a mk2 golf 16v gti master cylinder and servo, with new copper lines, new flexi lines, and refurbished g40 front calipers and carriers with vented discs.

The engine is still a 1.3 (looks identical to original), but it's from a Polo GT (75bhp standard), with a ported and polished head, GT cam, bike carb setup, four branch manifold and full stainless system. It has also very recently had a new cambelt, water pump, head gasket and bolts, along with all other seals/gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing, oil filter, nice air filters, new oil, new coolant, new fuel lines, new clutch, new cables and other bits and pieces.

The gearbox is also a 5-speed (small block mk1's have 4 gears as standard), which has required a custom welded mount (very 'beefed up'! Welded by the same guy who did the inlet manifold for the carbs, and the quality is very high). This is the short-ratio GT 'box.

I had one of these as my first car at 17, just passed my test, and on a policy completely on my own (no named drivers or anything), it was £1300 for the year. They are also cheap to tax, and I will put 12 months MOT on the car for the buyer.

With the amount I have spent on this car, and 12 months MOT, I believe a fair price is £1650. I am open to offers, but it's breaking my heart to sell this! I no longer have anywhere to keep this and my mk2 gti. I am considering putting both up for sale in the hope the mk2 sells and I can keep this! It has been an on-going project for a while, and I now think it's at the stage where there isn't much more I can do to improve it! If there is anything at all you want to know, please get in touch. hi there, can you please tell me if there is any rust or rot etc with the usual places on a mk1 golf, the mileage, the general reliability of the engine running on the bike carbs, can you please put more detailled photos up as i live a long way away. cheers

The shell isn't the tidiest, but it's not a rust bucket. I have had some welding done on where the floor meets the sill underneath on one side, even though I was told it wasn't structural, and wasn't required for the MOT. The mileage of the shell is 160k I think, but practically everything is new, even down to fuel pump, lines etc. brakes and lines, obviously all the engine, suspension, wheels etc.

I'm going to have the car 'mopped' by a mate who's a valeter by trade, then I will put some detailed pictures up, cheers

Wicked car got one myself how easy was it to change the lump mate I have a 1.3 and would like to run bike carbs as well but if it's just as easy to put a gt lump with bike carbs will get one as well like

Engine was quite a lot of work to be honest! To get a 5-speed box in you need a custom mount. The carbs are ok, obviously you need a manifold making, then it's just a case of wiring the fuel pump up; mines on a relay so will cut out in crash/start on ignition etc. then there are lots of other bits and pieces. Definitely recommend it, it's a good engine! (also expensive unfortunately)
