Hi guys, Just your opinions please,

I've got a lovely little 6N which I've had since the ripe old age of 16, but recently it's lack of creature comforts have made me think i might be better

off with a slightly better car, then low and behold I am offered a mint Passat, W reg, 1.8T 20V sport edition, 130000 miles, for £500,

Being that I'm only 19 my main concern is that insurance companies will bend me over the table and give me a nasty little suprise,

that and the fact that I have no idea what my car will fetch makes it hard for me to determine whether the purchase is a good idea or not,

I know it makes it hard to evaluate a car without pics, but just as an idea until i can get pics up, It's a 95, 1.6 8v, 125000 miles, on coilies, will upload pics tomorrow

you've got no chance getting insured on the passat... I tried when i was 19 on a 1.9 tdi estate and was quoted a minimum of £4k!

i had a 205 gti 1.9 wen i was 19, raddo, mk3 16v etc they cost me 1400ish

see now I'm feeling the ame i've already got rid of my 6n and am saving for a bora 1.9tdi now that i know the insurance is cheap enough for me as i was paying £2400 for my 6n and will be payin £978 on a bora 130 sport lol i think it may just be coz its diesel coz i tried a passat 2.0 and got penetrated at £3000> lol but with regard to yours 20vt = bye bye savings

Depends on your circumstances to which car would be best.

20vt polo insurance is suprisingly reasonable!

Got a quote from elephant for just shy of £2o0o, which is pretty much what I'm paying for the polo at the moment,

See Panda I did think about buying the passat and doing the transplant but it worked out too expensive to even consider really haha maybe in a few years

Had a word with the Passat owner, and was told that the oil pump is starting to go/gone, now I've been told that the passats have a nasty habbit where the oil fails to circulate and therefore the turbo and engine get foooked.

So i wouldnt wanna drive it home, Whats the best/cheapest way to get a back home with driving it? from roughly 200 miles away

It is, ultimately, your decision but I'd stave off buying said Passat.

You're gonna end up paying 2 grand for your insurance? seems like a waste of money to me. 2 Grand!!

I wish I had 2 grand to spunk on my insurance, I'd buy a golden teapot instead!

Anyway, a friend of mine with a 1.8 20v sport Seat Toledo regrets ever considering buying it because of the fuel consumption. Especially with petrol prices nowadays.

not to mention servicing, tyres and parts are generally going to be more expensive.

Is your quote fully comp or 3rd party?

Fully comp the quote was, see i didnt see it as that bad as I'm paying £1900 currently for the polo, so an extra £100 didnt bother me too much,

And as for the fuel consumption the polo is running ridiculously rich at the moment and i can deal with the running cost,

it'll be comfortable but you cant help think that 1.8t is abit underpowered for the size of the car. Wont be economical.

Look into a ibiza cupra if you want something turbo'd?

Anything with a turbo's going to be expensive at 19 though. I'm 22 and still paying 610 quid on a 20vt

everything is underpowered for a passat, but they're okay once they get going.

I suggest never looking at the mpg, because if you think it's going to be even slightly similar, you're going to cry.

Everything is stupidly expensive insure wise for me for some reason, this year the polo set me back £1960 in insurance,

And the Passat quotes have been coming up about the same.

They are cool, deep down everyone knows it, and fairly sensible,

My plan is to keep it completely standard for a year or two, then slam it and get something like rs8 wheels or similarly pimp wheels, oh and of course smooth it

my daliy drive is lreg 20lt passat it not that bad on fuel if you dont thrash it the 18t are not a bad cars just make sure it a good one or your be in for some big bills

if you can afford it and its itching at you then do it

like you say you can run it standard untill costs come down then get started on it
