scrappage scheme

Featured Replies

rite took a trip to the local scrap yard today, just casually browsing about and i see a carrado on its belly with an absolutely imaculate shell, get looking under the bonnet and it has a g60 lump in it. so i went to the bloke and asked him why it was in here and what was wrong with it, his reply was"scrappage scheme, and nothing wrong with it but its old and it was worth 2 grand towards a new car :S!

now is there anyway of salvaging it? when i say immaculate i mean every panel was perfectly straight, no rust, and it even looked recently polished :(

what would the car of been worth?

corrado's can hide a lot of secrets! believe me

thought the scrappage scheme finished ages ago? :?

I read before that it was the equivelant of a class b write off in that you could use parts for spares but the vehicle could not be put back on the road. I dont have and reference for it though, wouldn't take long just to search on google.

Also some dealers still off what they call a scrappage sheme but the cars they scrap you can buy back and do whatever you want with them, its only the ones done under the government scheme that you cant buy back

but surely it would have been worth more than 2 grand anyway?

Once a car's been traded in on scrappage it gets a destruction certificate, which means it HAS to be scrapped. The parts can be salvaged, but it can never go back on the road.

Otherwise it defeats the point of the scheme. The idea is to get dirty old shitters off the road and put people in nice new cars, which definitely don't come from dirty great big factories.

Good cars being scrapped makes me sad inside. :(

I thought you could only get them if they were going into a museum or something...

not necessarily

I thought you could only get them if they were going into a museum or something...

That's not going back onto the road though, so it's a loophole. And even then it's not easy, unless the car's a really desirable classic.

Unfortunately, desirable though the Corrado G60 may be, it's not a particularly rare or classic car. Not yet, anyway.

local scrappers to me wont sell nothing for the scrappage scheme, not even parts. some of the cars that are for that scheme are nuts aswell, surely it would make more sense to sell them to the paupers and use that money as a deposit and haggle the rest down.

not yet, but I'm fairly sure it will be! theres a few examples on ebay that are selling for less than 2k. would say now is the time to be buying one, as i dont think they will get any cheaper. I'm half tempted to flog my g40 on and buy one tbh!

So will most cars though.

I mean in simple terms the Ford Model T was a mass produced ancestor to the Escort and Focus. But nobody gets upset when a Focus or Escort gets scrapped, or worries that it'll be a rare car in the future.

Obviously I'm not suggesting that there's going to be as much demand on the 'classic' market for a Focus as there is for a Corrado G60 (I'm not mad) but if you check out what counts as a classic nowadays there are some fairly ordinary cars of yesteryear in the line-up.

escort cosworth dont drop under 15k sierra rs500 dont drop under 35k s1/s2 escort rs turbos dont drop under 2k(unless their fucked) not to sure about the focus but i cant imagine the original rs is going cheap. sierra cosworths come down in price for a while but they have soon shot back up to 5k.

i think the g60 will become a rare car simply because the prices will become low enough for youngsters to get hold of and most will get wrote of or fucked from modding.

What a waste :(

that whole scheme was a sham anyway the government wanted people in nice new cars, great, i accept that there are alot of cars that that are worthy of being scrapped. BUT older cars that have a following are generally looked after better than new ones, and pass there yearly government legislated mot test, therefore they are road legal and i dare say more efficiant than some newer cars. and to top this whole scamage scheme off, the dealers put there bloody prices up anyway to cope with 1k that was coming off there backs

i was almost sucked in by the scam, i mean scheme i was gonna trade my mk2 bready in for a new polo did the relevant credit checks and it all hinged on me saying yes or no and i declined, i couldn't bear the thought of my first car my lovely tired wrecked little bready going into the crusher. that and despite what the salesman was telling me someone earning £600 a month could afford to pay £205 a month just to own a car then add insurance and so on.

but there is a benefit from the experience my car now wears this sticker

ebay

i remember the news doing a report on it and speaking to a lad with a black mk2 golf asking if he would trade it in, he was totally against it, why get rid of a perfectly good mk2 for a piece of shit korean car wich is what he would of ended up with and what the majority ended up with in that scheme.

It's not just fuel efficiency though, it's general environmental damage that's the problem. New cars emit less harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide than old ones. That's where the argument lies. Carbon emissions and fuel economy may not be worlds apart between old and new cars, but they're not the only factors on the government's radar.

And the MOT argument isn't valid either. New cars have to meet much more stringent emissions limits than older ones, and again it's the harmful gases coming out of your exhaust which cost you your MOT certificate.

To illustrate this, my 2002 Passat has to be under 200ppm HC and 0.5% CO at idle (0.3% at fast idle). The Polo has to be under 1200ppm HC and 3.5% CO - so it's allowed up to six times more hydrocarbon emissions and seven times more carbon monoxide before it'll fail the MOT.

But realistically it's still a very heavy handed scheme, and seems to be aimed more at giving a crutch for the car dealers than helping the environment. After all, there's going to be a massive environmental impact from manufacturing the new cars, not to mention transporting, stripping and recycling the masses of old ones.

what you miss out in that arguement is the energy and damage to the environment destroying one car and creating another from what i've read is far greater than any gain in having a more efficient car.

It was a purely economic arguemnt to get people spending

^^ wasn't that the while reason they started it? To boost our economy by buying a foreign car?

Hurr durr I'm Gordon brown derp :retard:

Yep.. when the scheme was first announced they used the evironmental issues as well as the economic gains to sell the scheme. However the environmental bit was soon dropped as they realised the environmental costs in building a new car were extreamly high and outweighed any gain from running a newer car.

so my argument is still valid yes an old car may have higher emissions but its still better to have older cars running as they dont come anywere close to the emissions created when you take into consideration how much co2 is produced by

making a new car

shipping them new cars

shipping the old cars

stripping the old cars

and scrapping the shells of the old cars

Yes you are right... but the main reason and eventually the only reason for the scheme was to get people spending their money on new cars. And in that case it was a success.

yet there are still thousands of family's who cant afford a better car stuck with some hardly mot worthy car that could of benefited from the scam by replacing there shitty car for one of the many perfectly good newer cars witch got scraped and witch still had years of hassle free driving and would of been better for the environment.

OUR GOVERNMENT ARE A BUNCH OF TOSSERS WHY ARE THEY RUNNING OUR COUNTRY WHEN WE CAN COME UP WITH BETTER SOLUTIONS THAN THE PEOPLE WHO GET PAID TO DO IT.

In some circumstances the SS works but 90% of the time it is completely unessary to scrap a working car and get a

Modern car instead. Just out of intrest does anyone know what sort of CO emmisons these new cars produce because when I got my starlet MOT'ed it produced 0.3 of CO2 and the guy was amazed at how little pollution comes out the exhuast he said it produces alot less than most modern cars, it's 20years old!!! 1990!!

I've had some dirty and some clean cars for MOT. My first Saxo VTR would have passed a Euro 4 emissions test even though it didn't need to (1998 car), but my 1992 318is would have failed the basic test if we weren't slightly crafty... But that's what happens when you play with the standard fit adjustable cam pulleys lol
