AFH 1.4 ->1.6 16v Bottom end conversion

Oh and the flywheel bolts. When a flywheel lets go at several thousand rpm's it cuts through anything in it's path. I read in a reliable car magazine once about a rear wheel drive car throwing a flywheel, it cut through the bellhousing, through the transmission tunnel, and straight through the passenger's leg.

Ill refrain from telling you how many times I've reused them then!

How much are new ones roughly anyways?

  • Ah the avy crank pulley is the same as the afh on on width so works with the afh timing belt Spent the night pulling both engines apart lol

  • Does anyone know if the main bearing/crank bearings cap bolts are stretch bolts and do you guys replace them when swapping cranks and such. Cheers

  • I'm with Guy, I really, really don't think this is a good idea. I'd tackle just about anything I think I can do, but drilling a block 10 times and hoping that they'll all come out perfect? If it's

good job i never intend to be a passenger in my own car

Bit o lock tight on them and they should be good ;)

haven't decided which route I'm going down with this yet so just incase i decide to use the avy block is a M10 8.8 tensile all thread strong enough to make the custom idler stud out of?

I tapped a different pitch down the centre of a bolt and made the worst helicoil ever - and it held for the few thousand miles I ran the engine. Someone else got a proper custom rod made and it failed.

The science clearly isn't simple then, so I wouldn't like to say.

Il try and find some 10.9 or higher then if i go down that route. Actually i have the orignal bolt for the idler somewhere so il try and find that to see if its marked with a strength rating.

The science is fine. If you replace a high tensile bolt with normal threaded bar and then turn it down to remove even more strength shit will go pear. Its not the simplicity of the science that's the problem, its the simplicity of the people doing it that's the problem

you could always go down this route and use the standard bolt :)

This is my relay roller. Done by wire erosion.

amazing how precise and intricate the cut is! :)

hmmmmm maybe I should just either start drilling these out for people or buy a load drill them out and sell them on

be a good investment beings these engine conversions are really popular now

Do it Pete!

Yeah do it, would be a big help!

If it was me I'd just offer a drilling service, saves you the risk of getting lumbered with unsold pulleys

I had the pulley bar made and it never failed....someone should definitely get them made up since every one does this conversion now....yet there still only ever seems to be a few that actually run right lol

NO dont ..

Gonna rip out my engine now everyones done this lol ..

Going back to aav on injection !! lol

It seems to vary on drilling them, people seem to be able to drill the after market ones but not the genuine ones, or that's the pattern I seem to have noticed anyway.

Yeah that's what I'm seeing as well. The guys that did mine said nothing would touch it. I would make sense that the cheaper pattern part uses cheaper and easier to drill material.

the biggest update is the fact that this is now a 1.6 16v hybrid engine. I've used the AFH head and the ARC bottom end and after some dubious timing up of the engine, I am truly in love with this car =D it pulls so much better and is perfect for me

Ok so the hybrid went bang and cause an engine rebuild, the best mate who caused it got whacked

3 months - congrats sir!

Saf was the pulley you couldn't get drilled genuine or pattern?

My back up plan if drilling had failed was to bosh it on a universal grinder and run a diamond wheel through it, they cut through carbide like butter so some pissy hardened steal would be no problem. As it happened the correct drill bit made easy work of it so no need

Might ask you to drill mine out at some point guy actually! You just reminded me you have that special drill :p

Ill buy a cheap shit pattern one then haha

ill dig it out mate, its in a parts bin, one guy couldnt gave it to another engineer and he could. afaik it was a brand new boxed VAG jobbie.

nothing special about it, its just the right tool for the job

I'll dig the bit out and you can drill it yourself harris, my man with access to the lathes has retired :-(
