AFH 1.4 ->1.6 16v Bottom end conversion

Featured Replies

Can I ditch it? I don't have any of the piping or the gti thermostat housing to go with it. I'm gonna fit an air cooler soon enough any way although its more for looks

OI OI SAVALOY!

Cheers 8-)

  • Ah the avy crank pulley is the same as the afh on on width so works with the afh timing belt Spent the night pulling both engines apart lol

  • Does anyone know if the main bearing/crank bearings cap bolts are stretch bolts and do you guys replace them when swapping cranks and such. Cheers

  • I'm with Guy, I really, really don't think this is a good idea. I'd tackle just about anything I think I can do, but drilling a block 10 times and hoping that they'll all come out perfect? If it's

yeh man, you just need a smaller threaded stud to fit the oil filter sans oil cooler plate

Robbing bastards at my local motor factors tried to sting me £85 for just the avy head gasket, please tell me this isn't going rate?

Got them down to 65 in the end but still not wanting to pay that more for one and can't fine any on eBay to compare the price with

are you taking the piss =O

I'm doing this conversion this weekend and i paid 85quid for headbolts, headgasket, cambelt and water pump...youve been had guy....the gasket alone was £22

Don't worry lads I didn't pay it, i'll give gfs a try and see what they are saying just wanted to check that it wasn't the going rate like the afh cam belt kit, it still amazes me how much they cost

I got my kit off ebay, everything you need to rebuild the head for 36 notes. the cambelt kits are a rim string but it includes the cost of the tensioner and idler pulley.

sean - did you not get a new tensioner and idler?

It was cheaper to my my cambelt kit in bits then a full kit :S

My headgasket etc wasn't tht much tho think mine was

About 55 for a payen one

Nope just the belt as I've only recently had a new cambelt kit on the afh

I don't need the fully head gasket set as I did all that when I put the head on the afh just before killing it

Besides would the avy set even work on the afh head?

to be fair the metal 6n headgasket that people use on the G40, has the AEX/AFH part numbers on it, it was only like 15 quid from GSF. i can dig the part number out at the unit if you want it

But skodaboy mentioned that the afh gasket isn't ideal as the oil good are the wrong shape? I've got both the old hg's in the shed actually so i'll have a little compare and see which looks more suitable, afh or avy

I've used the hg part number from the list in post one on the previous hybrid engine i have built and I'm going to be using it again in the one i do this weekend, seems to be fine

I thought you were usin an afh bottom end. I'm using am avy gasket on my 1.6s

You replied to my post where I said I was using the avy bottom end you jelb

I plumbed the oil cooler in,just had to use a T-piece on one heater pipe.

Can't use the AFH exhaust manifold with it,though.

cheers for that bit of info mikey, the block I've bought has an oil cooler on it and am sure we can get a t-piece....though I'm running a 4 branch so not sure if that will offer any space at all to keep the cooler or not

Ah right, well afh down pipe is all I got the cooler will have to go, like I say I'll be fitting a air oil cooler at some point and I can't see it being thrashed to the point of needing one just yet. Cheers mikey

Off topic but are you going the polo show this year? Wouldn't mind a nose around your new setup 8-)

Any difference between the AVY and AFH pistons if doing the 1.6 internals in the AFH block?

Would the AVY crank, 136mm rods and the AFH pistons still land me with a 1.6 AFH?

I hope so as it would go quite nicely with my lysholm 8-)

read one of mikeymk's posts, that address's the issue of using the afh block and different internals

Think mikey says the afh pistons will give a higher compression ratio than using the avy pistons...

Which if you look at that from a different angle would it be safe to say that fitting avy pistons into a standard afh would drop the compression ratio?

Yes they will drop the compression ratio. Compression ratio is calculated by the following equation.

comp-ratio.jpg

Where

b = cylinder bore (diameter)

s = piston stroke length

V_c = clearance volume. It is the volume of the combustion chamber (including head gasket). This is the minimum volume of the space at the end of the compression stroke, i.e. when the piston reaches top dead center.

So decreasing the piston stroke length (going from 86,9 to 75,6) while keeping all other figures the same will result in reduced compression.

I am thinking of doing the same conversion using the AEE block and the AFH cylinder head. I know I will have to drill the block for the roller and I am gonna use the bcb or gti pistons. If we succeed I will post pics as this will a third way to achieve an 1.6l AFH.

AEE Block is taller, right?

So would AVY rods and pistons make for a low comp bottom end suitable for FI?

I have an AVY block/head with all auxiliaries, I'm wanting to put the AFH head on my AVY block.

Could someone please provide me a list of the needed parts to do this conversion.

Am I right in thinking I need:

AFH Head

AER Headbolt x 10

AVY Headgasket (with 4 extra tabs cut off)

AFH Cambelt

AFH Tensioner

AFH Relay Roller

AFH Waterpump

AFH Orange Injectors

Custom stud for timing belt idler pulley

I know its hard to just list parts but does anything else spring to mind?

Cheers lads!

I never cut the tabs off my head gasket and its been fine

I've not bothered with the custom idler stud either opting for drilling the idler out to suit the larger avy bolt instead, imo its too big a gamble to take on some thing so important and saf has already shown just how wrong it can all go if you use some thing that isn't up for the job

Thanks mate, probably won't bother with the tabs then since it's just another thing that could mess up.

I'll probably opt for drilling the idler too as like you say it's too big of a gamble for it to fail.

Am I right in thinking I'll have to convert my pedal box from drive-by-wire to throttle cable or can I use drive-by-wire (gti throttle body/ intake manifold) on the AFH?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How did you do this? I tried this for the ally block and couldn't do it that way.

The only idlers i had were genuine VW parts, solid nitrided steel, i found cobalt bits didn't even scratch the surface and my local engineers gave up before putting their mark on it.

I also tried pulling the bearing so i could try softening the metal or making another stem, but it wouldn't budge without bending the puller.

So the way i had to go was to tap an oversize steel grub in the block and then tap into that.

This is the biggest problem with using the GTi block, so if this can be solved then it'd be an easier conversion.
