AFH 1.4 ->1.6 16v Bottom end conversion

Featured Replies

It's all in my build Forbes

Yeah 144mm 1.8 20vt rods as yeah I skimmed them from 25mm to 20mm and rebushed the small end from 20mm to 17mm

It's a pity you aren't looking to buy rods as could have sold you mine and I could've bought some more to modify differently to suit the gti pistons but they are all sorted now due to me making the bronze washers for the piston guiding

  • Ah the avy crank pulley is the same as the afh on on width so works with the afh timing belt Spent the night pulling both engines apart lol

  • Does anyone know if the main bearing/crank bearings cap bolts are stretch bolts and do you guys replace them when swapping cranks and such. Cheers

  • I'm with Guy, I really, really don't think this is a good idea. I'd tackle just about anything I think I can do, but drilling a block 10 times and hoping that they'll all come out perfect? If it's

Mark could you not buy two packs of these would they suffice

Correct dimensions

I think those are 1.25 pitch thread rather than 1. Also mine seem to have a double thread on them eperated by a gap of avout 5mm.. not sure why it it makes any difference what so ever :)

They have funky shoulders for location I think

Oh if any one wanted to know how much a piston head (with rings) from VW is: £140 each

  • 3 weeks later...

Is that a VW part number mark ?

Is that a VW part number mark ?

yep :)

Have you got a price as i cant seem to find any others and wont have chance to ring vw

yes, an eye watering £4.78 each (+ Vat I think)

ouch :( .. Cheers

I'm thinking about using some AFH pistons in my 1.6 bottom end. I know this ups the compression to 11.5:1 but is there anything I would have to look out for or change/modify to get them to fit/work correctly?

I guess there is no issues.. just attach them to the rods and that's it?

Guessing so mark ..

I asked about when as i was concerned the afh piston rings i bought wouldnt fit the avy piston but that wasnt the case in the end .

Everyone just said straight fit ..

With the new Starter moters you have you wont have any problems ;)

how are the afh pistons different to the gti ones do you know are they taller

i had a set of both piston two weeks ago and completely forgot to compare

the reason i ask is if the afh pistons are taller (i know the crown thickness is bigger)then there may be a contact problem as the gti 1.6 internals in an afh block stop completely level with the deck at tdc

so if the whole piston is taller and not just less dish on the afh then they may protrude from the block at tdc and collide with valves/head

Mikey suggested it originally so maybe he has tried it

I'm running GTI pistons with my 1.4 internals to reduce C.R. but i haven't built up the engine to see if they sit any lower at tdc yet

I think Mikey has actually run with them fitted...

They're a straight swap, at least with the '03 BCB rods, BCB 1.6 pistons, and '98 AFH pistons i used. BCB is a 1.6 16v static cam version of GTi with 11.5:1 comp.

The GTi pistons have a dish around 1mm deeper and bigger inlet valve cut-outs for the VVT, these give about 11.5:1 with either head.

These are the same as the BCB pistons but for the bigger inlet cut-outs.

The flatter, plainer AFH pistons in the 1.6 take it to about 12.3:1 with either head.

I tried both AFH pistons and BCB pistons in the 1.6 AFH, now back on 11.5 with stock GTi bottom end - having not really noticed enough of a difference from 12.3 to offset my nervousness at hopeful starting and the uncomfortable thought of 12.3 going bang!

ahh ok.. I thought using the AFH pistons raised it to 11.5:1... hummm

No, you're already at 11.5 with the 1.6 bottom end in any case, whether you use Polo/Lupo GTi or Golf4/Bora parts.

AFH is 10.5 as a 1.4 so factor in the longer stroke and this makes about 12.3.

cheers for the info Mikey.. going to stick to the AVY/ARC pistons to play on the safe side. :)

I thought, basically..

1.6 internals in AFH block made 11.5

With AFH pistons, 12.3

I'm confused as to what I need.

AVY bottom end, AFH head. So as per original post.

So ill need:

AFH Head Set

AVY Head Gasket

AER Head Bolts

AFH Cambelt kit (belt, tensioner, relay roller)

AVY waterpump? Or AFH for belt offset?

AVY rings/shells/thrush washers

AVY Oil pump/crank seals

AVY conrod bolts

That the right codes for associated engines? Waterpump is the only one really I'm not sure on? Cba to read back through, prefer working with engine codes than part numbers

Yes, that seems right to me and you need the AFH waterpump :)

AFH waterpump is for belt thickness not belt offset and you need to drill out the relay roller from 8mm to 10mm

all early polo engines short block use the same shells and thrust washers too

and afh rings fit too

Sure if read there's something different about the rings.

Makes sense to me.

Will need to try and drill my crank pulley to have the 4 holes like an 8v one

I thought, basically..

1.6 internals in AFH block made 11.5

Yes.

Piston ring thickness can differ, I'm sure I've had two different thicknesses from early and late AFH, nobody else seems to have found this though, and i never found out what happened there.
