  • Ah the avy crank pulley is the same as the afh on on width so works with the afh timing belt Spent the night pulling both engines apart lol

  • Does anyone know if the main bearing/crank bearings cap bolts are stretch bolts and do you guys replace them when swapping cranks and such. Cheers

  • I'm with Guy, I really, really don't think this is a good idea. I'd tackle just about anything I think I can do, but drilling a block 10 times and hoping that they'll all come out perfect? If it's

Chain driven pump will not fit onto later afh/avy cranks etc.

The later afh/avy oil pumps are part of the crankcase irrc

Yeah it's built into the oil seal housing, about £80 I believe

yeah bought one for 85 and its the crank driven one, had a look see if it fit today but the cog on the crank stops it going right on, getting fucked off with this pump business now i just wanna get the engine sealed up and oil in.

both the pumps are crank driven its whether they are direct drive or chain drive by the crank

Yeah he knows; but I've got a chain pump chilling in a drawer after I put the 1.6 crank in, so he can have that. :)

cheers adam for sorting me out its been so hard to get hold of one without breaking the bank lol

at least now i can sort the engine and get it put in :)

stinkypete

yeah i know both are crank driven i just wanted to know if anyone had the earlier AFH oil pump because i have had so much trouble getting hold of one, i have just spent £85 on the wrong one and its starting to do my head in, i just wanna get my engine built but without that the sump can't go on and the fly wheel can't go on then that means the clutch can't go on so i can't get gearbox on its just a knock on effect and its annoying when you have all the other parts and the one you need and can't get stops everything.

it probs wouldn't be a problem if i had the right tools but i have tried to get the two bolts at the end behined the flywheel on and i just can't get to them with the fly fitted just end up rounding the heads off

They don't go tight, they're squashing silicone. You just need a ball-ended 5mm Allen key, most sets of Allen keys are ball ended now, cost around £15 a set, well worth having.

The part numbers on the first page, where do you order them from? I need arc/avy piston rings and conrod bolts.

Glad I could help man, atleast you can get stuck in now! :)

Atleast someone else can have some fun!

Nice one bro. Vw bolts are gonna be pricey!

I know mate.. bum rapingz..

Ask lupoboz though he said he could poss get hold of them :)

I think £40 is pretty cheap for your bottom end not falling apart and destroying everything in its path lol.

Yeah i know that

But the fact its 5ver per bolt ..

I've found a german site which sells them for 34 pound .. But postage is 6-7 quid.

Rather pay the extra 5ver and get them next day lol

When putting AVY crank and pistons into the AFH block what brand new parts need to be used and what can be re-used?

Thanks

Replace all wear parts, as they're matched 'bedded to' the main components. Particularly healthy components can sometimes be used if they're still matched correctly to their original parts/placements, but it's not good practice and is asking for trouble.

So new shells and rings. Oil pump can be checked for health, Haynes manual tells you how.

if you look well enought you can get a whole rebuild for under 200 easy

Ok thanks, isnt there some bolts that cant be re-used aswell? Where the best place to source them?

If your needing cheap parts from VW hit me up. A mate of mine works there get everything at trade...

Conrod bolts please!!!

The only bolts i always renew, critical stretch bolts that should never be used twice, are the con rod end cap bolts, and head bolts.

Okay, so re-using head bolts, some do once, and the worst that can happen is you loose a gasket and some oil/coolant i suppose (though getting oil in the cooling system can be hassle).

Loose a rod bolt though, and you've lost the whole engine - it can even cause an accident.

Thanks exactly the info i needed!

Oh and the flywheel bolts. When a flywheel lets go at several thousand rpm's it cuts through anything in it's path. I read in a reliable car magazine once about a rear wheel drive car throwing a flywheel, it cut through the bellhousing, through the transmission tunnel, and straight through the passenger's leg.
