It'll be marginally cheaper but most insurance companies are wise to this now (which is called fronting) and don't make the policy much cheaper at all than if you had your own policy - if you're the main driver of a car but not the policyholder and a named driver, it actually is illegal and if you crash, could invalidate your insurance. It costs more but it's better to be on your own policy with your folks as named drivers (it made mine £300 cheaper when I renewed) as you'll accumulate your own no claims bonus in your name.

Some insurers do a 10 month bonus accelerator policy as well which builds your NB up slightly quicker.

I think most companies don't care about any kind of experience other than that which gives you NCB. It would be as if you hadn't driven a mile since you passed your test I think. It'll be cheaper but only because of your extra age and having the license for longer, not due to experience.

Jamie is right, it's supposedly illegal but how do you define "main driver" and how will they know or be able to provide evidence?

and if you crash, could invalidate your insurance.

What would be the point in anyone being a named driver then, if they're not covered by the insurance?

I agree with Ray, they won't actually know who drives the car more, as they don't ask.

But getting back to the original question, getting a year's NCB under your belt will bring your insurance down more than anything else. However it just means the first year or so is ridiculously expensive. In fact it's fucking outrageous.

They would if its on coilovers, alloys etc.

They would still have to prove it. Your mum might like a low car with alloys, who are they to assume she doesn't? Yes they'd get very suspicious but they would still have to provide some concrete evidence that isn't based on people's perceived tastes (I would guess, I have nothing to do with law or insurance).
