Hi!

I seem to be having a few (possibly related) electrical issues with my 1997 VW Polo 1.4 CL. The problems, which may or may not be related are:

1) Temperature gauge doesn't register any temperature. I have replaced the temperature gauge sensor and this has had no effect. I have removd the dash and all the wiring appear to be connected.

2) The other day the battery was totally drained and the car wouldn't start. The battery is pretty new and after driving round for a few hours the car started a few days later.

3) The fuel warning light does not work.

4) A few times the car has not started which I diagnosed as an immobiliser problem. After unplugging the immobiliser and plugging it back in and jigging the ignition wires it worked fine!

Any thoughts on the above and if they are related or now!?

Lets stick to the temperature gauge problem, as I don't think that they are related.

I did in fact put this up for someone else this week.

Take off the temperature sender wire at thew engine end, hold/connect it to earth and switch on the ignition, the gauge should show 'hot', clear that wire from the earth connection and with the ignition switched on, it should read 'cold'.That test will prove the wiring and the gauge itself. If it works OK as I suggest, then the sender (new or old) is at fault.

Thanks for the reply, I will go and try that and let you know the results. When you say connect the sender wire to earth is that the wire that connects to the sensor unit at the engine end and will touching that on some exposed metal body work earth it?
