I got some heated golf vr6 leathers for my car the other day.

I need to sort out the wiring etc for them.

But anyway,

I got my polo handbook out the other day, and was browsing through it.

One a few pictures in there, it shows two roll swtiches for heated front seats, mounted between the two electric window switches?

I didnt think they did heated seats in 6ns?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

was hoping to get the pannel they mount into on the polo to slot straight in? unless its the same?

wiring shouldnt be too difficult anyway :)

alot of vag cars of similar ages share parts such as switches, so just keep an eye out

Use a corrado switch mate there the same by the looks of it.I'm still to do mine but ent had a chance do a little guide if you do yours first

yeah i was just browsing and thought the corrado ones were similar or the same!

i found a place you can buy a loom, but there like £50 so may make my own.

i presume the settings on the switches are a variable resistor, then youd have a 5 pin relay etc.

then obviously an ignition feed a + & - and illumination for the switches etc.

i need to test the heaters work in seats before spending time making wiring though, but i dont fancy putting 12v straight to them incase it blows them.

anyone know what sort of volts/current the heaters use?

According to the wiring diagrams, there are two control units mounted under both front seats, power is from fuse 14 15amp, if you would like a copy of the diagrams send me a PM

ours has heated leather seats.

switches work fine but according to VW / specialist the elements in the seats have packed up??? anyone heard of that before.

they were hardly used.... car being a 2001 and we've had it from new you just get use to it but it would be nice to get them working again

Iv looked at VW diagrams etc, and each seat should have a control box and temp sensor on them, however, this is missing off mine.

I was just looking at universal car heater pad kits, and the wiring on these looks very simple.

I thought about buying a kit and cutting the heater pads off these and using the wiring to connect to my heater elements in seats.

All that appears to be with these kits is wiring to each seat, a relay, and a 3 position switch (0-1-11) ie off, heat 1 heat 2. this alters the current to the heaters.

Just wondering how difficult it would be to make my own wiring?

If i had an ignition feed so they only work when the ignition is on, could I just have a relay and a staged switch and flick between temps?

I presume the control boxes etc on the OEM seats are to turn them off when a set temp is reached etc?

Not too clued up on this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The same control box is fitted on all VAG models up to 1999 so maybe a trip to your local breakers yard you might find the items?

I have this in my 6n2, you could probably get the parts from one of them too.

think the seats have 1,2,3 settings for heat and they dont turn off after a certain amount of time - I'm fairly sure they stayed on all the time if you left them switched on, which probably shortens their life expectancy

been researching a bit more and I'm doing an auto electrical course atm, so iv worked out what I'm gonna do (when i have time!)

i can just connect a 12v power source to them to test they work first.

i then need to measure the resistance of each and from this calculate what current they demand and what thickness cables, and rating switches and relays etc il need.

I'm going to either wire them to a variable resistor switch or just a 3 position switch ( 0-I-II ) this will mean that they wont be wired as smart as OEM, they will be constantly on (well, when ignition is as I will wire them to ignition) wheras OEM would have temp sensors to automatically keep them at a stable temp (switching on and off etc)

when i get chance to start working it all out il try and draw up some diagrams and make up wiring looms etc and let everyone know a simpler solution than spending £££ on wiring kits etc!

If you have a copy of elsawin, there is a section on fault finding the heated seats, and one of the tests is to check the resistance of the heating elements, they should be 2 ohms when cold, so that equalls 6amps if my ohms law is correct?? (been nearly 30 years since I needed it at tech college!!)

Guys I've bought a set of heated Recaro's from a MK3 Golf and have the wiring loom and switch panel from the donor car too..

Reading this thread however, am I right in assuming I would also need some sort of a relay?

They need to go into my wife's 6N2 and the Haynes manual suggests there should be a fuse for this in the fusebox so I'm planning on running the wiring into the fusebox.. but what would I need a relay for if I have the switches and wiring? What purpose does the relay serve in this situation?

on each seat there should be a control unit, temp sensor and relay, however, it may all be contained in same unit. I'm not too sure!

you could get the whole loom for around 30 quid delivered. the switches with surround for around 15 relays about the same delivered.

i have factory heated leathers in my 6n but had no wiring or switches and asking on here people said that it couldnt be done. so 30 quid later and my arse aint cold no more. lol

the standard surround on all polos have the opening for the heated switch behind the middle panel, there are also openings in the floor carpet for the connectors to go through and iirc there are only 3 wires to go to the fusebox . ignition , constant live and ground.

most german polos come with bumwarmers so they are 10 a penny

That does help thanks mate, but I think you're talking about a 6N and I'm talking 6N2 which has the Lupo dash.. so I think the MK3 Golf switch is going to need some butchering to fit into one of the spare slots on the lower centre console (next to the rear screen demister switch)..

So as long as I have the loom, in theory it just needs to go to the fusebox. Someone has sent me the Golf MK3 wiring diagram and i have the 6N2 Haynes manual.. Need to get stuck into this soon now.

On the 6n2 there would be 2 switches, (1 for each side), same theory though. This system works the same as the golf mark4.

I have a wiring diagram with pin outs which say the exact places that each wire goes.

I will try to get that posted on here later.

Iirc the 6n2 switches are the same as the passat ones and should slot right in. However if you don't have a loom you will have to either buy them with the connector, or maybe butcher one from a breakers yard.

It does'nt tie up with the wiring diagrams on elsawin for the 6N but is good for the 6N2 as this has the electronics module built into the dash heat selector unlike the 6N where the electronics module is fitted under the seats

OK this is helpful.. I think. Only problem is that this diagram is for the heated seats that would have been fitted to a 6N2 from factory. What I have is the seats and loom with switch from a MK3 Golf (I would think similar to a 6N).

I think in theory if I'm using everything I got from the donor car and just giving it a 12v supply, it should work. I'll just have to try and find a place for the switch to fit.

But if I want to use proper 6N2/Passat switches (preferred option) I'll have to find a way to make the switches work with the Golf seats...
