Evening all,

I just bought an a nice old 1995 GLX. (It's electrics include, Windows, Mirrors, ABS, Twin Airbags)

The car has the standard 4 speakers. 2 in the dash, left and right, and 1 in each of the front doors.

However, only the left 2 speakers are working. I have taken what I thought to be an original head unit (it says for Polo/Lupo on the side and I'm pretty sure the Lupo wasn't out till 1998) out to look to see if any of the wires were loose. And apart from the + wire being on by a thread (ordered new ISO) they were all fine.

However, there are only 4 wires going in to the speaker section, and I thought there should be 8 (2 from each speaker). The 4 wires for the speakers and the 4 wires from the power section are all wrapped up together in what looks like the original VW fabric tape...

So am I missing 4 wires from behind the dash somewhere?

You are not missing any wires, the dash speakers are in parallel with the door speakers, so there are two wires for the left and two for the right from the radio

I'm 90% sure the head unit isn't broken as I turned the ISO round so the left speaker wires went in to the right side on the head unit and the left speakers worked but the right didn't.

If they are parallel, and one speaker is blow, would that stop the other working as well?

I'm totally lost for ideas as to why the speakers aren't working.

If one of the speakers went short circuit it would kill both, a possible cause would be in the flexy wiring tube to the door speaker, if the wires had chaffed through and shorted to each other then that would kill both speakers

my door stopped working but the tweeter was fine? but was broken wires in the door sleeve that caused it..

if you still have problems pop the tweeter out of the dash on the affected side,its also a crossover which sends the sound to the door woofer and check its connected correctly

to check if its faulty simply connect the wires from one socket to the other,if you get sound now at the door (though very bad quality) then its a faulty tweeter and crossover

still nothing then faulty wiring from headunit,or faulty headunit

Hi thanks for the reply. I tried that (swap and still nothing, checked head unit and head unit wiring. Looked inside the door and cant see any broken wires. Think its time i took it to a pro.

I just tried something similar, I plugged the Door Speaker into the Tweeter plugs and it worked, so now presume the Tweeter is blown. Going to order one now and hopefully that will get it all working. Thanks again for the help.

I thought you meant switch the leads on the door speaker but then it made me think to switch the actual speakers so thanks.

I have found these on ebay £3.99 + £2.50p&p

However, I have thought I might take the opportunity to upgrade. Do 2 way 10cm plug straight in or do I need an adapter?
