1.3 Gt cam in 1.0 litre conversion

Featured Replies

Just thought i would let people know that i have now performed this conversion and would say it is worth doing. There is a noticable difference from 2500 rpm seems to rev alot easier and there is a difference in induction note too, you can tell its sucking more air in. The hardest part of the swap was getting the cam belt back on! it was an absolute arse i really hate the type of tension on the mk4. Anyway i just thought i would let people know its worth doing....

Thanks Graeme

Your cam timing is out.

  • Author

why? have you seen my engine? have you seen how i have timed it up?

Yeah if you have put the Gt cam in the 1.0 AER then your cam timing will be out i should think,

Its only the mk2/3 heads that it can be straight swapped without changing the cam timing.

An alright way of seeing how many teeth it is out is by putting the original cam back in, marking where the first lobe is with respect to the timing marks, and then matching it up with the GT cam. Should only be a few teeth if that.

Thank god youve had no valve to piston contact, and it drives well.

not wanting to sound like a tit but i do know what i am doing guys, firstly do you really think i would just start my car and hope for the best? The cam was put in as close as possible to the way the 1.0 one came out, as said above with lobes. Then all put back together, turned the engine by hand to confirm no piston vale contact. Then the ignition timed up with a strobe using the bottom end pulley. Car runs great, no issues at all. Thanks for the positive comments wished i hadnt have bothered letting people know!!!!!!!!

There are plenty of people that would just shove the cam in and hope for the best. You feel asif you need to treat most people on here like idiots.

Don't take it personally haha.

i gathered that mate but i would have hoped for comment slong the lines of "oh great i have been hoping to do that nice one" etc etc

Glad to hear you got on alright buddy, need to get my arse in gear and rebuild this head now lol.

thanks luke, wasnt too bad of a job really just a ball ache getting the cambelt back on. What are your plans for the head? i was thinking the ports on my 1.0 head are prob restricting the best out of the gt cam but if you stick a gt head on the 1.0 bottom end where does it end??? might as well just stick a gt engine in

well thats it my 1.0L is completely stock and quite hesitant to strip it, but for what i payed for the head i can afford to port it an fuck it up lol, and i want to get the car looking right before any pennies go on an engine, but i change my mind everyday so I'm not sure what will be done first, still trying to get a lock up lol.

And yea getting ambets on can be a prick especially on newer diesels.

Sorry if i came across abrupt , I didnt mean to.

But as toby (b-shaw) said, Alot of people are asking about this mod and i just thought that you were one of them,

Glad its made a good differance, It was the first mod i did to my AAU a while back.

Like i said, your cam timing is out. Unless you timed it up with a vernier pulley and your opening post totally throws that.

No you didn't use the marks, you went by the lobes. No matter, you may think you know what you're doing but your cam timing is out and if you dont know why then you dont know shit so stop being stroppy.

For the record - the 999cc crank does not time up with the GT cam properly with any VW pulleys. You may be within the nearest tooth on the belt but you are near half a tooth out.

So now you know, your cam timing is out and if you're gonna be so kind as to tell people its all hunky dory, whilst its appreciated, i personally think they have the right to know its flawed.. without being timed up properly with a vernier pulley.

And i think they should know that if they put the cam in and go by the marks, they may destroy their engine - a point you omitted.

well anyone with any sense will know you cant go off the original timing marks when using a 1.3 gt cam in a 1.0, secondly there in no way i would spend out on a vernier pulley on a 1.0 for the sake of half a tooth infact the only reason i put the cam in the first place was because how cheap i got it and to see if it made a difference.

With regards to timing it may be out it may not, i have timed it up to the best i could and made sure that nothing internally is contacting (pistons/valves)

It runs well no issues to report and its more revy

All i wanted to say to people is that it is a worth while mod then you pipe up with a very abrupt line "your timing is out" you need to work on your people skills

No i dont,i pointed out a fact very relevant to the topic after you spelled out a load of mis-information. I did not attack you personally,my first post wasn't even tactless, just added some info you'd failed to disclose.

I actually expected some intelligent return like "would you go half a tooth advanced or retarded? What would you use/do differently?"

But no,you just went straight into defensive dickhead mode.

Those cams go for reasonable money, usually. Money some people dont have too easily.

Suddenly, well since the first post and my addition,its.. "near enough,i got it cheap, you dont use the timing marks.." and whatever else has changed or conveniently been left out of the picture.

So like i rightly pointed out, doing this will leave your timing out. And for those of us who dont think its so daft to believe they should go by the cam timing marks (which is like, what they're there for),half a tooth is a notable amount that will have an adverse affect on the performance of the cam, minor or not in your view.

I'm just clearing up what you've failed to add for whatever reasons you have regarding your own circumstances, which may not be the case with others - in fitting with the spirit of the topic, which is to kindly inform people of a modification.

Personally,id use a 6n 1.4 cam. The 999cc engine differs from the old 1043cc intro lump as it is a medium stroke engine which has small bores, and the cam from the medium stroke 1.4 should suit it better - they're cheap as chips and it times up properly..

Just to add my tupence, Mikeymk seems to me to be one of the most experienced members on here with regards to modifying engines with stock parts etc. So to go on the offensive without paying heed to what he's saying makes you look somewhat ignorant. Which is fine. But your information may well have a detrimental effect on other peoples projects if they choose to follow your example. This forum should be a collection of knowledge, not egos of people who dont like to be told they are wrong

ok seems to be getting out of hand this now!

This is not a how to put a gt cam in a 1.0 thread nor did i intend it to be. As you can see there are no pictures, or step by step guides of what to do, i was letting people know it is possible how they go about doing it is their business. Mickeymk maybe if you had said " Your timing might be out mate maybe worth checking" as oppose to "your timing is out" i may have thanked you for letting me know. Maybe it was just text read the wrong way if so i apologise.

Prankstar no need to add your tupence mate the thread is already got out of hand no need to come in and make it worse and as for an ego mate i drive a 1998 6n polo than was given to me by my sister which webuyanycar.com valued at 70 quid, believe me when it comes to my car i have no ego.

i do appreciate the advise on using the 1.4 6n cam though, the only reason i used the gt cam because i have heard its the most aggressive cam vw made??

Edited by fish6634

I agree, yeah i could've put a slightly more human slant on it. Fair play, but you cant really preach that one can you..

Anyway, yeah the GT cam is the most 'sporty' for the 8v but that 8v engine is the '86-94 series of engines. And only the 1.3 fitted to the 6n. And the 1.4 fitted only to the MK3 Golf.

The rest of the 6n engines are a newer generation and differences include a larger bore, different breather vent design, engine mount anchorage point change and.. a different uniform of timing.

I appreciate Prankstar's 2p and he's more than welcome to it,whether that's convenient for you or not. Not that i know everything, noone ever does, but i am strong on the '86-'02 engines relevant in this topic, hence me taking the time to make a minor addition i felt important.

By the way,it'll run best with the void half a tooth advanced.

like i said i never wanted the thread to take this route

can we start again, i appreciate you saying you could have said it better and i will admit i shouldnt have been so defensive about it.

call it quits?

Bit long yeah, but i think its all adequately covered now.

Enjoy the motor,btw.

cheers i may even go down the 1.4 16v bike carbs one day, your car looks awesome

Cheers - consider an 8v though,as they sound better with the carbs. I miss scaring old grannies since using the valver head.
