Featured Replies

Hay guys

Got a horrid kind of grinding noise when i rev but only on the over run when i lift off.. out of gear or in gear makes this noise. it sounds like it from the left hand side of engine if you where looking at it from the front, next to G-box. it sounds like its below the pistons but wont know till i get my stethoscope on it at work. at first it sounded like a blowing exhaust from inside the car but when i popped the hood its sounded like a grinding rattle.

serious any help would be awesome.. dont wanna drive it in case its like a big end shells or something..

JRC thnx

Failed big-end bearings, main bearings or small-end bearings don't make a grinding noise, they would give out a knock, a rumble and a rattle respectively. In any case, failed big-ends would tend to make themselves known more under load.

Is it worth checking the gearbox oil before you do anything more drastic?

I think that you are wise not to run it 'till you have located the fault.

Regards.

ok well i'll check the G-box oil checking for shrapnel coming out.

i hope it aint anything serious.. heard of pully bearings going??

thnx JRC

iv got a grinding noise coming from the engin too. i took mine to a gear box specialist and he said the comon falt with the polo is its gear box. I'm not saying that it is the gear box in your situation. just sayin its worth checking it out. first thing to go with out servicing it is the gear box oil. once the car has been run for quite some time without gear box oil the plastic housing that the gear bearings are sat on melts leaving the bearings to heat up inside the gear box causing the grinding noise. thats how iv got told. iv got quoted 120 +vat for the plastic and bearings inside the gear box to be fixed. iv been told not to drive. as the balls from the bearing car lodge them selfs into the teef of other gears and cause more dammage to the gear box. i hope this helps. aj

dude gear box specilists have told me its the 5th gear bearing and forks or somthing. cost me 133 to get this bearing replaced now i have no grinding but instad a ringing noise wen reving up through the gears. i do just under 5000 rpm and it still continues to jump out. i decided to blip it along the motorway to c how far i could pust it. i managed 80 and it keeps poping out. I'm taking it back tomo. hopfully this time thell be able to tell me wots wrong. hope you sort yours out bud. but for the time being mines an investigation on its own. lol.

Whining and popping out of gear is the 5th gear being fucked. You need a new 5th or new gearbox.

I didn't know gears had individual bearings? There is the clutch release bearing that causes a rattle, that has nothing to do with 5th though..

Rattling should stop when the clutch is pressed? Soon as you release the clutch it will rattle again if its the release bearing.

A gearbox blowing up at 80mph wont do you any favours
