car lost power on the motorway, rev count down, and engine cut out.

after 10-15 mins on the hard shoulder, it started again and drove normally for the 36 miles til destination.

any ideas what it could be?

car passed its mot the other week, just tightened the fan belt the other day.

Could be fuel related, how much petrol was is the tank? Might have sucked some sludge through if it was running low, fuel filter could be caked

Throttle body could need a clean, trial and error really :)

sounds like a spark issue due to the rev counter dying as well, it takes it's signal from the coil so if it was fuel related the rev counter would still show revs if you were costing in gear.

also the fact that it fired up and rove normally again soon after would sugest that it's some thing in the ingnition system breaking down. my money would be on the hall sender as i had this happened to me and have heard a few people say that they have had the same problem, but it could just as easily be the coil i guess?

it is a mk3 polo that you have?

x 2 most likely carb icing. especially with the humidity at the mo. nothing to worry about it happens with carbs, just pull over and wait for a bit!

x3 - mine does it when the temp drops outside - misfires and loses power, till you pull over for 5 and then it's fine. doesn't have to be icy cold - but if the engine hasn't warmed up properly and you go on the motorway, it'll accentuate it - kinda expected it on mine cos my mk2 golf does it too...

if it was a fueling problem (or carb icing) the rev counter wouldn't die when the engine cut out, the coil would still be sending out a signal while the car coasted in gear. it's only when the coil stops sending out a signal that the rev counter would drop
