hi

can anyone give me some tips on how to remove drive shafts from my 1.0 6n gearbox.

also if anyone could tell me what size allen key it needs that would be great.

cant undo bolts without turning box. and when i jamb the hub the allen key slips and cant get any other allen keys to fit?

any advice would be great

try putting in it in gear if it keeps spinning, not to sure on the allen key size

could it need a spline socket? just did a quick search on google and seems that the mk3 needed a spline socket

iirc its a m8 spline bit you need

when i did mine it needed a spline socket. a good way to check is push your finger into the head of the bolt until you get an imprint of the head pattern. you will need a socket mounted one to get them off though because they should be quite tight. i used a piece of wood wedged between the driver seat and the brake pedal to stop the driveshaft spinning. alternatively get a mate to stand on the brake pedal.

yep its a spline tool. When you put the tool in the end of the bolt give it a good tap with a hammer to make sure its seated correctly, the bolt heads tend to get full of shit over time.

just so i avoid learning the hard way, are they all standards threads? any opposite threads?

all are lefty loosy. i normally put the car in gear when undoing, stops the driveshafts spinning, or is they are stroppy, get a mate to jump on the brakes while undoing them.

as said above M8 spline and tap them in with a hammer to avoid them rounding

also worth mentioning, they are stretch bolts and should be renewed, although most on here, me included, use the old.

If the car has disc brakes,put a screwdriver in the vent of the disc - it'll lock against the brake caliper,and stop the driveshaft from turning.

yeh what mikey said... or ge a mate to hold the break down to undo with the spline... if the spline wont turn (too stiff, or rounded etc) you can use a pair of grips... which is what i had to do after my spline tool snapped. remember to give them a check tomake sure they stay nice and tight about 1-2 weeks after putting it back on. its not too much of a hard job though. just take your time, easily get fustrated doing it! 8-)

yea mate will have rack out asap. extremely bizy at the mo coz just got a new 6n and found it needs some work to gearing, can't find any gears. so thats another job to add to the list

You'll need to find some contraption to hold the thing still by the other bolts/holes/joint. Big flathead,stilsons,whatever. Failing that,chop the heads off with a thin disc on an angle grinder.

if you've got a bench mounted vice, you might be able to lift the whole box onto the bench and clamp whats left of the shaft in the vice.

^Tried that yday, but the shaft continiued to spin in the vice. Stillsons may have to be brocken out. Or as mkiey said, wee grinder blade.

ah right, yeah grinder might be the best option if they are that tight. This happened to me once doing something similar:

overtightened the vice using a scaffold pole on it's handle and it went KABOOM

What, the vice did? wouldn't want that!

Dont suppose you have an mk2 flange knocking around that i could put onto my gearbox? Its a 6n2 one you see, and i think you may have mentioned that you had one knocking about somewhere.

yeah the vice went bang as per the picture :) so don't overtighten it! I dont think I have a mk2 flange knocking about, I'll not get a chance to check my garage till at least tomorrow night anyway

if you had a welder handy you could weld something to the shaft to make it easier to jamb
