these are machined to the head and cannot be used on another head.

you need to change the head!

nah there not mate iv got ones off of all different engines and havnt had a problem with them since fitted 12000miles ago and i drive on the red line

Yup matched to the head.... When you start gettin that cam whine its pretty much new head time unless you wanna get new bearings made.. But thats costly as they arnt removable appart from the caps.

If you start swapping the caps around your possibly using one half beaing with say 100,000 miles on and another with 40,000 on it... theres gonna be more play in the 100,000

iv got on my engine 2 bearings from a gt engine and 3 from a 1.0lt engine all different millage iv not had a problem in the 12000miles iv been driving it so far it been on the rolling road twice and i realy do drive it in the red just ask rob white lol

and who the hell is going to buy a second hand head for £60 when you can get a couple of bearings for less than a tenna?

i just dont see how each single bearing cap can be custom made for each place along the cam they are made in bulk ie thousands at a time all to the same spec yer they will of warn but they do wear in

there is a pikey way, and a right way.

they line bored then cut off from what i've heard - so not custom made, but merely chopped from the same head you might not have issues in 12,000 miles but yr cam would last much much longer and hvae less swarf in the oil if they matched the head. I've thrown 2 heads away as they didn't match and had been changed at some point

well that is true, but your logic is totally flawed by the fact you are assuming everything is oversized, and "wears in"

so once your cam has worn in, and you then put it in a head that is also worn in, how will that work?

and you are assuming they wear the same flat pattern, there are so many factors that i personally would not risk, you could get away with it, but like i say, it is a bit pikey and "fingers crossed"

Correct. Visited a sister company of ours last year that produce and develop engines used in low power motor sport.

The bearing "caps/housings" are from the same cast as the head , meaning that the caps and head are one piece at the start of their life (on most engines). The caps are then line milled and then carefully bored to from the correct shape of the bearings on the cam, then the housings are cut off, Meaning that the housings are only a perfect fit on the head they were cast on.

Housings from a foreign head will definitely fit , but may cause all sorts of problems, Most of them already mentioned.
