Can you identify this connector floating around under my bonnet?!

Picture quality isn't the best but hopefully you can make out enough to see what's going on. I've got my theories but I'll let you guys have a guess before I let on!!

gearbox reverse light switch

haha beaten to it!! seconded...gearbox reverse light switch- on front of gearbox lower down...

also what I thought when I looked at the picture (that it's the reverse light switch connector).

OK, that makes sense. Will check to see if reverse light comes on.

I found this connector on the bottom of the gear box, but that plug wouldn't fit it I don't think? Should it have another fitting on it to take the loose plug?!

Yes, take socket from first pic and place it on said plug. check if reverse light works. Simples

Not sure that plug will fit on those pics though??!! The plug looks like it take pins that are turned through 90 degrees in comparison to the ones that are on the gear box. Looks like it need some sort of adaptor?!

Looks like the gearbox has been changed for an earlier one at some point,as that's an earlier switch.

I'm sure you can swap the switch for a later one,but you'll have to be bloody quick with a tray under it or empty the gear oil out first..

you've got the switch from a mk2 and the connector from a mk3. Has the car had a gearbox swap at some point?

Heh. This thread just saved me a lot of hassle. I was planning to troubleshoot my non functioning reverse light over the weekend. :-D

if you chuck a hair pin into both contacts to bridge them together the reverse light should come on

I had this problem. Just cut wach wire and attached a spade connector, to each, and then pushed them on

Good thinking!! I guess it must have had a gear box change then. Car is new to me. Gears seem fine and the clutch pedal is v low so maybe someone did both at same time for some reason?!

id just leave it you dont need a reverse light for the m.o.t

I'm going to fit a euro style passenger side rear light when i can get ahold of one to get rid of it completly

No he's right. Reverse light isn't part of the mot. But I'd still want to fix it since its so simple to fix anditll let people know when you are about to reverse.

Plus it illuminates where you're about to reverse at night.

One little issue is that the plug doesnt currently reach the gear box connector as it is trapped under that mounting tray thing with the long studs coming through, so I'll have to loosen that of first to release it. Grrrr!!

Are reversing lights part of the MOT test?

The testing manual makes no reference to reversing lights and are not testable items as such, however you *could* be issued with a failure if they were illuminated all the time.

yes, i realise that the mot test does not specify reversing lamps as a testable item as long as front fog lamps. but if the lamps are actually fitted then they need to work.. i'm trying to find a reference to it in my mot handbook

Two things-

with regards to the MOT test, I had mine a few weeks ago and they tested that the reverse light worked. Good thing I removed the blue light bulb

also- my freinds mk3 reverse light doesnt work, I know its a fault with the circuit somewhere because I've tried chaging bulbs, and have even tried the working rear light clusters from my car so its definatly not something wrong there. I'm going to look for this plug ^^^^^^ next time I see him, but is there anything else It could be likely to be?
