Correct, Tyre tread is not allowed to protude the arch, not worth the 3 points + £60 fine mate - Will come under either a CU20 or CU30 Conviction. (joys of training for police)

if your wheels dont poke - you don't need stretch. :-)

well ther 7j (4stud)but I'm running 165/50 r15 nankangs, they are bbs wheels from the bmw e30s

Within reason. A 195/45 on an 8J rim isn't a mental stretch but could be enough for tyre clearance and is even suggested as a suitable combination by a few tyre manufacturers and the TUV.

235/35/16 on a 9.5J

No problems as yet.

Doesnt look silly though. Probably why it doesnt attract any attention.

Yeah you should be fine with that, BMW fitted 235s to 9Js as standard so an extra half inch won't instantly make it dangerous.
