I'm going to look at a car on saturday that has no insurance and no tax on it and just wanted to know my options with test driving and getting it home..

i would get tax but i'd need to be insured first and have the log book to do this. and the seller cant tax it as he needs insurance to do so.

would it be ok to book it into an mot at a garage and happen to drive past my house to get there?

also if theres no insurance on a car, would my parents who are insured to drive other cars be able to drive it? Or would i need to get an insurance policy taken out on the car itself?

also is there any way at all i/my parents could legally test drive it?

You need to have insurance to drive it to mot station, check your parents small print but they should he alright to drive it as long as it's got T & T. You dont need a log book to insure a car either.

You'll need to get a day insurance policy to test drive it.

A car needs to be insured to be on the public road, if its not insured at all it can't be driven anywhere.

You don't need the log book to tax a car just the green slip thing from the log book and if you get day insurance you get a certificate of insurance sent to you via email so you can use that to tax it.

In all fairness though I've bought cars that have been untaxed miles away from home and just driven them up the road. I'm sure (especially at the weekend) if you can prove you have just bought a car untaxed and are driving it home you would get away with it.

if you have no mot or tax, you can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.

think i'll get the one day policy and if i do buy it i'll go straight to the post office and get some tax.

the only issue is test driving it.. would test driving it untaxed be a bad idea?

depends if you get caught and if the plod who caught you was an arse!

the chances of getting busted would be pretty slim if you tested it around some minor roads. you choice at the end of the day.

Even though a policy permits driving other cars, it doesn't mean you can just jump in any car and be covered. Like borrowing a car, the car you are test driving has to have it's own insurance policy, which means it should be taxed and tested as well.

If you buy it, temporary cover is the only option for driving it home. And if you booked it for an MOT then strictly speaking there should be no deviation from a reasonably direct route, so make sure you have to pass your house to get there! But even then the car has to at least look like it could pass the MOT, booked in or not, claiming you are on your way there in a rotten shit heap with bald tyres still won't go down well with plod. Plus you don't want to piss off your local MOT station by booking a test and not turning up.

Its something alot of people get away with driving it without, but personally I wouldnt risk it.
