basically.. I've bought a polo gt, but the owner has lost the logbook so simply...where do i go from here? what route is the easiest to go down to get it sorted? will it cost me anything?

you can apply for a new logbook from your local dvla office,I'm not sure where yours would be,try google.or you can goto the post office and get a v62 form and apply for a new logbook that way.

it would cost around £26 i believe for a new V5.

if you need to tax the car then you will also need a v10 form.

Did you get a reciept from the previous owner? You need to apply to the DVLA for a logbook (I think you can get a form from the post office? Maybe they are online too), write a covering letter explaining the situation and incude the owners name and address and a copy of the reciept. The DVLA with then send a letter to the current registered keeper (hopefully the guy you bought it off!) and when he confirms he sold you the car you'll be issued with a new logbook.

Not done it myself but I believe that's how it works. Try the DVLA website.

If you use a V62 (either by post or at a DVLA office) there's a fee and you have to wait for them to write to the reg'd keeper.

If you use a V62 with a new keepers supplement it's free.

If the old keeper uses a V62 (either with or without, fees as above), it saves them writing to him, then he can just sign it over to you when it comes through.

i havnt got the car yet I'm getting it tomorrow, but he has just stated he will be writing a receipt along with mine,the cars full details and that i will have to pay the fee because he's selling the car so cheap he cant afford to pay the fee? dunno if thats fair really!
