i've seen a top mount shoot off and all but knock my mate out when it smashed him in the chin

All I can say is, I was shiting myself taking that top nut off.

I just undo the nut and point everything well away from my direction.

Or you get a mate to press on the spring to compress it justa tad to get the nut off, there isn't that much tension in it as there is little load on it.

Wasn't the case last time I watched someone buzzgun the top nut off and get a huge shock.

I just undo the nut and point everything well away from my direction.

Or you get a mate to press on the spring to compress it justa tad to get the nut off, there isn't that much tension in it as there is little load on it.

Same as me, although I do use spring compressors for putting shocks back together.

I'd just undo the nut on the top, and make sure the shock isn't pointing towards you. I do mine against a wall to stop the body of the shock from flying back.

If you plan on using that damper again I would take the mole grips off the stanchion, you mark that surface you can say goodbye to the damper seals!

Not going to be used again anyway, not ideal but the only way I could get it off barely any scoring though :)

I dont understand why you would take so much risk for the sake of about £10? just get spring compressors.

I done mine with out the help of the vice. i just stood on one end and put my wheel over the other and hoped for the best lol :)

well..... afew of the members on here will be able to tell you that I'm no novice to pikey spring compressing, I've used my own strength ( does hurt abit) and cable ties which are amazing!!!

I've done that before admittedly. Push down with my chest until it hurts, then put the big cable ties round the coils lol.

i used rope on mine. tied it around each coil and it was all good.then used my weight on it to put new ones together.

well i ment I've pushed down and held it with my own strenght but i have also done as you have descirbed tobyk

i usually lay them flat on the drive pointing towards next doors front door and stand on the spring while i buzz the nut off with mi air gun

although i have seen them go strait through a breeze block wall (why i point it towards next door lol)

Depends on the springs. With stock springs on a Mk3 there's a fair amount of tension, 40mm lowering springs not so bad and 80mm don't need compressors at all.

have non of you ever thought about removing the top mount nuts while it's all still fitted to the car?

if you do it while the car isn't jacked up it used the weight of the car as a spring compressor and takes the pressure off it slowly as you jack it up. repeat in reveres when putting back together, saves spending money on spring compressors and prevents getting a spring smashed into your forehead if it all goes wrong

I usually just chop the spring. Takes the tension out of it.

Not a good method if you need the spring though
