I have a straight through system with standard backbox on a 6n2

I was told if I cut open the backbox and hollow it that it'll be mad raspy?

It's got a little rasp to it now but only when it's cold

Personally i prefer a nice burbble, hence the ashley system i have. Each to there own.

Yeah, 6 pound a bargain. But its whether it'll work or not. If you're taking out the baffling, i can only think it will be louder

Yeah I'm just going for bargain until I can afford the £500 custom stainless :) and want an engine swap soon so may aswell wait. Dunno just need to know if anyones done it. Mind just give it a go and see what happens lol

I bought a G40 back box off ebay,and it was horribly raspy,hated it.

Slightly uncalled for TBH.

Wadding doesnt really effect noise volume that much, my stainless system was stuffed quite well with it (i was there when the back box was made) and i dont get any rasp but under full throttle it can still be too loud. really wadding just dampens the noises you dont normally want.

1. get rid of the middle silencer (if you haven't already)

2. if its a standard back box cut it open, you should have 2 layers of metal to cut through.

3. once open cut the perforated tube and replace it with a steel tube (iirc i used 43mm) and weld it in.

4. the hard part, you will have to weld the box back together all the welds have to be air tight easier said than done

but I've found a smear of gun gum works well to seal any pinholes :-)

i tried this on one of my cars and its sounded bloody awfull i was afte a rasp but it just sounded like a johndear with no exhuast but i supose diffrent engines diffrent sounds just have another back box just incase lol

sounds brilliant on mine i did not replace the whole tube but left the first section alone so its quiet at low revs then when i floor it it makes a nice raspy note also quite quiet the motorway too

If you're going to pull out all the baffling and wadding then why don't you save yourself the effort and get a plain bit of pipe to replace it with???

Do that and it wont pass MOT, you'll be stopped by the police in no time.

why would stainless make any noticeable difference? it's like when people ask how to get more power and people tell them to get a stainless system, the type of steel used to make an exhaust makes very like odds, it's the design of the system that would make a difference.

I don't understand why you'd want a loud or raspy exhaust anyway.

It's very tiresome.

If you want it to sound loud disconnect your lambda sensor.

Put a massive hole in your cat with a screwdriver and pry-bar, will rasp and sound really shit like mine currently does.

duno about that, i've got a 3" straight though pipe with a side exit on my jetta, probably had it on for over a year now and no sign of getting bored of the noise that makes

I've never had a car fail an MOT for debaffling a box... But it is officially illegal to modify an exhaust to make it louder.

You'd be surprised, different materials resonate in different ways, so the material is as important as the design!

Yea I couldn't afford two boxes at the time so got a single box + decat on my car.

Now I don't know what to do because tis too loud and the garage want so much to put another box in... gotta put up with it I guess people can think I'm a idiot, won't change my exhaust for them though

You can get stainless Jetex centre boxes for about £50-£60, get one of them, chop a gap in your centre pipe and clamp it in!

^^ or get a used mig from the bay,then weld on any back box of your choice from a breakers that fits.

I just got a mint stainless Powerflow off a Vectra SRi for a score. Feel sorry for the poor previous owner of the lovely motor - it was a compound breakers..

sorry guys, have to but in, all I've seen is coments of people asking why you would want a loud raspy exhaust, difference, loud and raspy are different. Mines raspy as hell and i love it, but not to loud. Sounds awsome with a rasp wen you are gunnin it, change gear and the exhaust pops:P :)

Stainless is more brittle, and hence has a different resonance to the softer, mild steel. Its the more brittle nature that gives the raspy note as it resonates in that range. However, your right in saying the design has a large impact too. In my experiecne, and of those who build exhaust systems have told me, stainless gives rasp, whilst mild gives more of a burble.

i have decat and no midbox with standard backbox

it was pure quiet when i first put it on (time of this post)

but after a few motorway runns its changed tone and now sounds pretty decent :)
