I know there have been topics in the past, but most people have some idea of what they would like, and it's just a case of narrowing it down. I've just been paid out for my polo being written off, and I'm currently driving a mk2 golf gti which i'm selling. I can, but don't really want to spend anything more than £4k, and for that money I think I could get a nice, low mileage Ford Fiesta ST (bit chavvy?), or Skoda Fabia vrs. I also like the old Ibiza Cupra 20vt's! Does anybody have any other recommendations or experiences with similar cars? :-)

I've always wanted a fabia vrs. But there really not much to look at!

Some well spec'd ones about with leather, cruise and xenons.

MK3 Ibiza Cupra out of those definately. My mate just sold his absolutely mint 2002 one, stage 2'd for £4600, and picked up a stage 1 2000 model for £2500, so well within your price range.

Very fast cars once tweaked with a bit, the stage one is very quick and the stage 2 was running 256bhp so as you can imagine, even faster.

I do love the cupra's. There was one on ebay recently in black, 83000 miles, new turbo and mapping etc to take it up to 290bhp, bbs lm's and coilovers for £4500 buy it now! Was very nice. I know what you're saying about the vrs Neil, I find the shape really ugly but strangely nice at the same time! And the cheap tax, mega cheap insurance (for what it is), and decent mpg would be nice! Any other suggestions? For 4k I reckon I could get a nice low mileage old shape a3 1.8t and easily afford to lower it and get some nice splits?!

yeah you'd get a a3 for that. There abit boring though!

Depending on how old you are (insurance- although with a 1.8T in there i can't imagine its a problem), i've been surprised today at how cheap Mazda RX-8's are. I know not everyones cuppa of tea, and not VAG (start the haters!) but some people like them!

Everyones allowed their own opinion- i like them and on pistonheads, theres some decent examples starting at around £3,500. Although i'm not surprised with romours of owners struggling to get 20mpg!!!

I loved that Skoda at edition, it was unreal! The black metallic paint is soo nice. Hm well.. I'm 18! But surprisingly a vrs works out a lot less than my mk2 to insure, and an ST/cupra is only slightly more. Not reeeally feeling the rx8's to be honest, would like a civic but insurance is too much on them, not so sure on the Robin . I guess I am quite bored of the mk2, think I want something newer..

How much is a Cupra to insure for you at 18?

I couldn't get quotes under £1950 for a 20vt cupra, at 18 with 1 years no claims.

Had to settle for a MK2 Ibiza GTi 2.0 which costs me about £1500 to insure and its not exactly slow. I'll wait and get the cupra next year as the step up from my GTi.

Bought for £4650 + 1 off Comp TH's in 8x17's - Bilstein spring & Shocks - Whiteline rear ARB - Audi TT312mm brakes - Angel Tuning remap - Jetex exhaust (the prototype) - PD160 inlet & K&N - Pioneer Double Din & upgraded speakers with 12" Kicker Sub. Around the 180-190bhp mark but still does 50+ mpg! :)

Thats the SE - they were only available in 2007 - colour is called Race Blue - only 1000 made - they all have black leather with the build number stitched into the seats. Cheapest ones are still over £8000

That sounds amazingly cheap, considering people on here cant get insured on 1litres for less than 2k at your age

I know, insurance is beyond a joke. I did a LOT of ringing round and bargaining with virtually every insurance company! Plus the years NCB and I live in a fairly safe area (full of old people).

What are you looking for? If it's performance, drop the ST off the list...

A std VRS will waste a Fiesta ST - they have no torque and weight loads! Ok so its a 2.0 with about 150bhp. but they aint quick!

Depends what your after I guess. I got the fabia as I wanted summat fairly quick, but didn't cost the earth to run as I work ~30 miles from home. This thing is nippy, tax is £120 a year, and as said above, you get 50 mpg and they're fairly insurance friendly.

If your going for big performance there are probably loads of better handling/tunable cars for that around your price range, look at clio 172's or corrolla t sports for example.
