Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a new shell for my 6n as the current one is rust-ridden and falling apart a bit! However where do i stand legally with this? Basically I'm buying a shell with an engine in it and transferring all the parts off my current 6n onto it. Does this mean i use my number plates or the donor shell plates? What about the vin plates? What do i need to tell my insurance? (the engine is the same size as my current one) Iknow this sounds like a ball ache but I'm getting it for a good price!

this is what I think I can remember. :)

Registration works on a points based system you have to have a number of original parts on the car for it to keep its original plate. This does not mean they have to be the same as when it came out of the factory just of the same design.

However if you change the shell and its not a brand new un registered shell then it will have to be on a q plate. So the best bet i would say is transfer all the bits over to the new car and keep it on the plates the shell came with.

You then, I guess, scrap your original car and insure the new car. so you will just be moving the insurance from one car to another just like when you buy a new car.

Ok cheers. So basically when i buy it i should just do it as if i was buying a whole car (i.e. get the v5 etc and send to dvla saying I'm the new owner), then just transfer the bits form my current car?

My current shell is a mess! arches are falling apart and its now starting to go along the sills as well. Basically i could try and cut out and weld in new metal but i dont know if id actually find any metal good enough to weld to!!

what bits are you wanting to swap exactly? why not just scrap your car and transfer your modifications to the other more solid car.

That's not a re-shell, it's just you getting a new car, lol.

yeah i see what your saying but the new shell is literally just a shell and engine! I.e. No panels, interior or anything! So I'm literaklly stripping my current car to put everything on the new shell!

Does give me a good excuse to take a week off work and tinker! :)

I'd say as long at the new car is UK registered then you keep the registration for the new car and just whack your panels onto it.

Unless you swap over the engine, then you don't need to "tell" anybody anything.. other than the insurers about any mods etc. If you are going to swap the engine, then you need to just tell the DVLA the new code.. on the log book of your old car.

I suppose just transfering everything over to the new shell and registering that in your name would be easier, and if you want to keep your current reg plate, you could retain it, scrap your rotten shell and transfer it to you new car as if it was a private reg...

Yeah this is what I'm gunna do i reckon. Dont care about the reg plate so as far as the insurers are concerned ill just be buying a new car. The shell is SORNed at the moment so just need to rebuild it, tax and test and ill have a rust free car!!
