My brake light switch went completely today meaning i have no brake lights at all. I went to VW to get a new switch and he looked it up with my reg number but had none in stock so gave me the part number 6Q0945511. I went over to GSF and they had none in stock either but told me to try SEAT. I went to SEAT and they had one in stock. Upon removing the old switch the mechanic changing the switch found both of the switches to ge very diferent. The old switch had the notches as it is pulled out wheras the new switch did not. The old switch also had a completely different part number (1J0945511b ). The new switch did not work at all despite trying the method explained on here and what the mechanic knew.

Does anyone know whats going on because i am now without a car and will have to find another way to get to uni tomorrow.

The 6n2's brake light switch was revised because they broke so easily. Even the dealers fitted them wrong apparently. On the old switch, you had to have it out the car, pull the plunger the whole way out, insert the switch (while holding the brake pedal down with one hand), insert the switch, yadayada..

The new one should be black, and much bigger and stronger looking. Just put it in at 45 degrees, twist, and press in the cable. Bravo! :)

Both my old switch and my new switch are black and i can see there is no way of ulling out the new switch as it springs all the way out to begin with but when fitted it does nothing at all so maybe its just a faulty switch.

for a temp, can't you put a sign in the back window that says "Caution, No brake lights" ?

Yeah mine died and started working again quite a few times since i got the car in january but it went completely eventually. If yours has been starting to go id definitely recommend getitng it replaced when your car next goes in for any work after all its only a very cheap part.

And my dad went in to VW today and asked them about it and they said it is definitely the right switch and they remodelled it after problems and they said either it wasnt being fitted properly or the switch was faulty so they said for me to bring it in so that they can try it for themselves

Its goen in to VW now and they are charging me £50 for the parts and fitting because the original switch was broken. The depressing thing is though that they did a check of my car and found my auxiliary belt is worn, i have a leaking sump, my gear selector seal is also leaking and there was something else as well and they gave me rediculous quotes for these so i said no to them fixing those so they are writing them down so i can get them sorted another time and probably for a lot less money.

i'm having some work done to my car at a non VW garage (totalling £265.55) and they are doing the brake light switch for FREE.

it's only a cheap part and the fitting is pretty simple.

I know going to VW is a rip off but for my money i did get a whole load of checks done on my car and it got cleaned and i dont mind because my parents saiid they would pay this time because so much has gone wrong with my car in the last year. The list of things VW told me i need fixing has a total cost of £318 and thats not including new front tyres which they say i also need. I'm thinking of getting a set of the SE alloys with some decent tyres on if i can find any rather than getting new tyres for my crappy standard steelies.
