Well the time has come to move on from the mk5 and try my hand at something new!

The car is very well known to lots of people and has toured the lands going to shows and meets for the past 3 years in my possession and it has been trouble free for the whole time!

When i bought it the car was, as standard, a 2004 United grey Volkswagen Golf mk5 1.4 S 5dr manual.

The car currently has just shy of 69,000 miles on it but since it’s a daily it may just top 70,000 by the time it sells, the MOT is due in late June 2011 and the tax runs out at the end of March 2011.

Whilst in my possession the car has been through a good amount of changes. Most of these are noticeable whereas there is a lot of stuff which goes by unnoticed which was one of the goals with the car!

Although originally an S spec (which is basically the lowest spec model) the majority of the “S spec-ness” has been changed. This includes the whole interior revamp (now has piano black removable trim pieces on all the door cards and dash which involved replacing all the door cards and lower dash), R32 cloth sports seats (a rare and sought after interior for the mk5) and also various colour coded exterior pieces.

The car in general is in very good condition. There are a few stone chips on the leading edge of the bonnet (as you would expect) and a miscoloured paint patch on the bottom corner of the passenger door. The car is well looked after all throughout the year, given a wash every week or so, polished using Auto Glym and Meguiars products and clayed whenever the paint starts to feel a bit rough. The car has also been professionally machine polished 2 or 3 times since I got it to remove any swirls which have been induced by washing meaning the paint work is in very good condition.

The mechanics of the car are also very good. Although a 1.4 it does a good job of getting places without much fuss. There are no rattles or awkward noises from anywhere on the car. There has also been a brand new full set of pads (front and rear) put on the car a couple of months ago. The car was also tracked at the height it is at just now (the amount of lowering threw the tracking out a bit) and this was done about a month ago. Also the car had a full set of brand new Nankang tyres fitted about 6 months ago and have probably only done about 6000 miles. There was also a new sump fitted to the car in mid September 2010 after i hit a rock and smashed it. The car was switched off right away and the car was checked over and given a clean bill of health!

The car has been featured in the “built not bought” section of PVW and also placed as “well commended” in the top 10 at DC10.5 2010. So basically what you have here is a real world car which could be made into a possible “show car” with not a lot work.

Chassis: FK highsport coilovers

Wheels and tyres: 18x8.5” Mercedes S550 polished/gloss black wheels with 215/35/R18 Nankang NSII’s, full set of spigot rings, AMG centre caps

Exterior: Smoothed front bumper to remove plate recess, colour coded front bump strips, early spec colour coded grey headlights, black front vw badge, OSIR genuine carbon fibre mirrors, orange side repeaters, colour coded handles, gloss black vinyl wrapped door pillars, R32 tail lights with colour coded tops, colour coded and black 2 piece rear vw emblem/boot opener, US spec “objects in mirror are closer than they appear” drivers mirror, half coded Gti lower rear bumper, removed rear wiper with metal plug and twin exhaust with Audi A3 tips.

Interior: Full R32 grey and black cloth interior with ski hatch and R embossed head rests, full removable trim upgrade with piano black trim (4 door cards, glove box and under-steering wheel pieces), full chrome pack (glove box handle, handbrake button, gear gaitor surround and cd player buttons), various gloss black pieces (all 7 dash strips, lower speedo cover), mk6 chrome trimmed auto headlight switch, mk4 polo gloss black/united grey chequered rear view mirror, golf embossed stainless steel sill plates, edition 30 leather golf ball style gear knob with gloss black chrome trimmed surround and black leather gaitor with red stitching, leather handbrake cover, euro cup holder with sliding cover and metal bottle opener, front backlit interior light panel with red ambient lighting, split rear interior light, flocked radio/upper heater/heater control surrounds and OEM carbon effect coin holder with flip lid.

As mentioned there are a couple of bad points of the car (and when i say bad, I’m really being nit-picky but better being honest). There is the miscoloured patch on the bottom of the front passenger door, the plaque from the engine cover that says vw and 1.4 on it is missing and has been from before i bought the car but it’s something I’ve never bothered about but i have added my own little vinyl cover on there :p there is also a couple of stone chips as you would expect on the leading edge of the bonnet too. Also the air bag light is on as i haven’t connected up the wiring for the front seat air bags. It’s an easy fix but i keep forgetting to get connectors from seats at the scrappies to make up a little patch loom. And lastly the wheels (as clean as they look) have seen better days. There is some general marks on the lips from stones, there is some paint peeling from the sides. They do come up lovely with a polish but to be perfect they could probably benefit from a wee spruce up!

Anyone looking for a real world car with the that can turn heads and make people smile wont be disappointed with this. The car could be turned into a show car with very little effort and being a small engine car with 5 doors its a bit different to the norm (and being small engine means even for a young’un like myself with points on their license, your only looking at £400 a year for insurance, fully comp with everything declared!)

It’s hard to price such a car as there hasn’t been many sold but taking into account the prices of standard mk5’s of this age/mileage and also considering the cost of parts included (£600 seats, £200 lights, £600 wheels and tyres, £250 mirrors, £100 gear knob, £80 rear badge etc) I’m looking for £6250 for the car. Also seeing as winter is almost upon us and polished wheels will hate you for running them through the snow and salt i’ll chuck in the original steels (15” black steels with 195/65/R15 pirelli/??? tyres all with tons of tread left) for use during the winter months.
