Hi. As said in the title this is a feeler. I'm not sure i am making the right descision, as love this car and it saw me through my first 2 years of driving. Here goes:

1981 MK1 Polo N, 895cc in Malaga Red.

Engine/ mecahnics:

This car is in excellent mechanical order, and starts, runs and drives brilliantlly i would trust it to get me anywhere. The only thing wrong is the top mounts are worn. I have a new pair, but never got round to doing them. Its had new cambelt, fan belt, alternator, water pump and gead gasket. Also a rear brake cylinder, brake pads and new Battery. Nearly forgot the new fuel tank, and at the same time flushed the fuel system and cleaned the carb.

In the time I've had it, it never failed the mot on anything serious: One year it was the washer jet, and the foglight last year. Both of these worked the day before the test. It was funny seeing the guys faces when they found little or nothing wrong with it.

Bodywork:

The bad: Well its a 30 year old car, thats been outside all its life, so there is rust aplenty. It is rusty in most of the usuall MK1 polo places. Rear arches , sills (only back 1/3, near the arches and right side has a bad repair), front wings, front valance, and inner wings, along with various surface rust scabs, parking dents and chips.

The good: The battery tray, and all the floors are mint however. And the paintwork really shines when clean. My intention was to get the car restored this winter, but i had a small crash earlier in the year which bent the front panel, and ruined the bumper and grille, and bent one of the lights, causing me to lose interest. It is now SORN.

It is not the best Mk1 out there, but nowhere near the worst I've seen.

New panels etc!: With the car will be all of the panels needed to make it solid again and various other bits and pieces. It has taken me 2 years to find and spend alot of money on these. 2 wings, One NOS, and one original in useable condition. NOS full front panel. 2 sills, a near mint tailgate, inner wing repairs, a left rear arch, front bumper and a spare rear in good condition, near mint late spec grille and a pair of NOS boxed bosch headlights. There is also a spare rear bench, which i was going to uses the fabric to repair the worn bolster on drivers seat (rest of seats are good). The exhaust in the pics is a NOS ANSA from 1977, and is super rare.

As said i am not sure this is a descion i want to make as I've been putting it off for ages.

If i did decide to sell would there be any interest, as this would make a great car when finished. Heres some pics:

If i decide to sell i would want £1200 ONO. I wont break, or sell the parts seperatley.

Before saying it is expensive, consider this: A) You know where you stand with the rot, as its not hidden under filler, and apart from one sill, car is unwelded. B) All the parts with it cost me over £600, and you would struggle to find them cheaper, and it may take 2 years to do so. C) I wont be making any money on this at all.

I am sort of looking for a mk1.. and though I am no stranger to rust and eager for a project this does seem a bit much for most to tackle?

Its good that your letting people know about the existing rust but it seems like alot of money for a car thats probably gonna need a heavy resto.. and no tax or test?
