1.3 MK2 GT Camshaft ? and Manifold?

Featured Replies

I have a Hydro head 1.3 MH engine in my Polo

I am looking to uprate the cam and make it more revvy and pickup slightly better

I have a decent pierburg carb that runs well, I see no reason to spend £300 on a weber kit atm so am looking at spending money elsewhere

as mine is mechanical fuel pump, is there any camshaft that will fit in mine without me changing the pump

It doesn't have to be OE, although that would be nice

I would like a GT cam but I know it requires electro pump conversion and thats quite expensive?

also will i need a better manifold to notice any gain from Cam

Thanks

You wont need a new manifold unless your changing fueling.

The GT cam is your best bet, Come up quite alot on here, and just require an electronic fuel pump conversion, Will cost you about £40 for the fuel pump and all its gubbins, And about £50 for the GT cam.

If i was you i would do this, and also purchase a second hand Webber conversion, A DMTR or DMTL , this should see you into GT power.

Very fun.

You also need to make a blank for the hole left by the mech fuel pump. think you can also buy them on ebay.de

Or just knock one up. Or keep the original pump in.

Is it really important to change to a DMTL/DMTR, it's just that my pierberg 2E3 works really well (I was surprised too after hearing the stories about these carbs :) ), offers me 40+ mpg, autochoke does not stick etc and a weber is a lot of work (or so I hear), plus I heard the bonnet doesnt shut unless I get a K&N pancake, which are useless in winter

If I keep in original pump will it just be redundant? I am thinking of a rotary electric pump (or should I get a genuine pump off a MK2F)

GT cam sounds good, its just that I heard they are useless with a non GK/GT manifold but if this is not the case then thats better!

Thanks for help so far

Well if your 2E3 is working fine then keep it mate. But the weber alternative would be better in all aspects. Mostly power.

The best thing you could do with fuelling would be to use a facet fuel pump. Ebay is your best bet, But they come up from time to time on here.

You fit them in your engine bay, using the pipes going to your original fuel pump (Which will be rendered useless) , But you can leave it where it is , or make a blanking plate.

Don't know who told you about the GT/GK inlet manifold being "needed" as that is bull shit. The GT inlet manifold requires a MPI fuel system , So you would never be able to use that.

The GK inlet manifold would help a lot , even more so if you upgraded to a DMTR.

If i was you i would swap over to a GT cam and electronic fueling for now. Then your half way to having GT power. :-D

I have written a "How to guide" in the FAQ section regarding swapping out a cam.

if your 2e3 carbs running right just leave it on, when they work they really are very good, there isnt that much gain fitting a weber, mostly just reliability due to there simpleness

Beg to differ.

Have a look through the FAQ section , After fitting a DMTR , an otherwise standard MH gained 7bhp, Which is pretty cool.

Its only a matter of time till the pierburg starts to suffer, then its too late as there very hard to get going again properly, I found anyway.

Up to you at the end of the day.

My pierburg is running good, and I know it could fall down at any time, but this is my 1st car and I will have plenty of time to put a weber on in due course, my car has 77000 miles on it, so maybe if it gets to 100000 while i still have it , a weber could go on then when I have a little more money

On the HP side of things, would the jetting affect power?

Yeah I thought facet pumps were good until I saw this post on my thread regarding facet pumps

"They are rotary screw type pumps as opposed to the horrible Facet clicky pulse pumps. They guarantee an even flow rate and are self regulating"

So what are the differences in the two types of pump?

Also I heard a MK2F GT pump is good? (if I can find one)

Sorry if their dumb questions, I am new to owning a car full stop

Thanks

@willsalter1000 Do you reckon there will be any pumps like these at U Pull It scrap yard? (I've never been before but am hopefully going on thursday)

hi there, you will need a low pressure carb specific fuel pump i should think, theres loads of cars at upullit but there all going to be equiped with high pressure fuel injection pumps which is no good to you, i would just but a new facet or something of ebay if i was you

just to let you know there isnt any early polos in upullit atm, loads of 6ns and a couple of old golfs, worth a look round though very cheep aswell

Yeah, I want a rocker cover off a 6N for mine and if i can find a decent middle section for my exhaust then I am happy

I'm glad you told me that as I thought a high pressure pump would work and I was gonna nab one off an old BMW (or the like)

and if theres anything else that takes my fancy I will probably grab it, Ali told me its really cheap

Cheers for the heads up on the Polo's and all the help so far

i know it sounds silly but i dont think youll be aloud to take the rocker covers off, they like to keep engines as one peice, although if they dont sell you one i have one you can have

Thats a fair point, although a rocker cover is not a lot really, I'll see how it goes and if they dont let me take one then I might have to take up your offer :)

Cheers

Nah they wont let you take a cam cover.

Not a complete engine then is it.

Unless they've got fucked or dismantled engines.

From past experience

just depends who serves you really when you go to pay, most of them who work there probally wouldnt be bothered about you taking a rocker cover but there one or two who are grumpy sods
