hay chaps.

my polo 6n 1.4 8v. was wonderful then i started playing with it. lowered it 60mm with stiff German suspension. then the exhaust mani ripped off from the head 4 studs sheared. need to replace pretty much all bushes as theres nasty knocking noises going over bumps and general cruseing. and now the MPG has gone to shot. used to be able to get just under 400 MILES PER TANK now just over 250 MILE PER TANK!! what the hell!! bearing in mind costs about £50 to fill up, I'm doing that every 2 weeks! HELP!! my bank balance PLEADS!

have you checked your tank for fuel leaks inc the filler neck

yeh man no prob tank end. while running the car with heater on can smell fuel not major smell but defo there. is it possible that if the times is wrong that its blowing back into carb?

not to sure on that one mate would have to see it have you looked around the engine bay see if you can locate where the fuel smell is coming from or check the exhaust system make sure theres not a small blow somewhere other than that i,d get it checked out that sounds like an awful lot of depriciation I'm mileage to me

Checked all the ignition parts? leads, rotor arm etc.

Blue temp sensor might have failed, leading your car to thinking its always running on cold start and therefore using lots of fuel.

Or lambda sensor failed.

Are you sure that you have a carburettor on this car? In any case, the timing would have to be way out to do what you suggest.

When you replaced the exhaust manifold, was the lambda sensor damaged or disconnected?

Is there any petrol stains on the floor where the car has been standing?

Are you sure that it is petrol that you can smell through the heater, or could it be exhaust fumes?

If there is a petrol leak, you may see clean areas on the engine which would otherwise have an oil film on them, or you may be able to 'sniff' for the leak.

The above are only thoughts, but may lead you to the cause of the problem.

I'll check the sensors tomorrow. It's defo a carby. i took the air filter off today and opened it up and and the littel hose that attaches to the bottom of air filter seamed to have a load of mayonasey stuff in it almost like oil and water mixed. dunno where the hose goes to possible crank breather? but that hose smelt of petrol. worrying.

any ideas?

I've got the same problem...looks like mustard! lol

It cant be a carbed engine if its a 1.4, unless its been converted to carbs
